This weekend, Karen Pirie is set to reappear on ITV, tackling a fresh, prominent cold case. She’ll be working alongside her trusted associates, such as Chris Jenks’ Detective Constable Jason Murray and Detective Sergeant Phil Parhatka, who is also Zach Wyatt’s team member.
I must mention that as we move forward, I’ll be collaborating with a fresh face on our team. DI Simon Lees, portrayed by Steve John Shepherd, has introduced a new member – DC Isla Stark, skillfully played by Saskia Ashdown.
From the beginning, there’s an aura of enigma surrounding this fresh character, and Emer Kenny, both a writer and star of River Wilde, shares with us exclusively through TopMob that Isle is initially portrayed by Lees as somewhat of an admirer of Karen’s.
During the conversation, Kenny interacted with TopMob, along with actor Lauren Lyle from the show “Outlander,” who added insight by explaining that “Karen perceives herself as a fan.
Later, Kenny mentioned, “However, given her deadpan nature, Karen finds it quite bewildering why she’s part of the team, and it transpires she’s actually spying on Karen.
She’s an excellent new member as her unique vibe sets her apart from the others. Initially, she appears not to be invested in the case, but eventually, she becomes deeply involved with the team.
In his words, Karen Pirie stands out amongst other detective series for its witty humor and an unusual assortment of eccentric characters within the main cast, who are truly peculiar and quirky.
She clarified, “It’s similar to how many individuals feel in their workplace, where you might not socialize with people beyond work requirements. However, an unexpected sense of camaraderie develops, making you resemble a peculiar small team or group.
Kenny added: “And then you kind of love each other.”
Lyle commented, “She seems more like a work colleague than just an acquaintance too,” he added. “It’s as if we’re all drawn to her and I can’t quite figure her out. Karen finds her confusing and hard to read, but she always follows Karen’s instructions, which is useful.
In its second season, Karen Pirie follows the storyline from Val McDermid’s book “A Darker Domain,” where the investigative team delves into a 1984 case involving Catriona and Adam Grant, who were violently abducted at gunpoint.
Simon Heath, the executive producer, hinted at numerous surprises, which suggests we’re all buckled up for a thrilling journey ahead.
Karen Pirie season 2 will air from Sunday 20th July 2025 on ITV1 and ITVX.
