Karl Urban Sci-Fi Action Thriller ‘Dredd’ Finds New Streaming Home

Karl Urban is a remarkably talented actor who doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. He’s consistently delivered strong performances in major franchises like The Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and in films like his recent release, The Bluff. He’s the kind of actor who always makes a role his own, and he proved that in 2012 when he brilliantly took on a part previously known for Sylvester Stallone.

As a sci-fi fan, I always feel like some truly great films slip under the radar initially, and this one definitely did. Directed by Peter Travis and scripted by Alex Garland, it came out in 2012 and was actually based on a comic from 2000 AD. It didn’t do amazingly well in cinemas, but thankfully it found an audience on DVD and streaming. Over time, it’s built up this really dedicated cult following – and honestly, I’m right there with them hoping for a sequel, because it deserves one!

The movie Dredd is a futuristic action film set in the sprawling, ruined city of Mega-City One. Judge Dredd and his partner fight to restore order to a massive 200-story apartment building ruled by the dangerous drug boss, Ma-Ma (Lena Headey). Originally released in 2012, Dredd hasn’t been available on streaming services until now. It will be streaming on Tubi starting March 31st.

‘Dredd’ Is Like a Sci-Fi Action Thriller Version of ‘Die Hard’

As a huge fan of the Dredd comics, I have to say the 2012 film completely blows the 1995 version out of the water. Karl Urban’s Dredd feels so much more authentic and believable than Stallone’s take, and the movie really captures the gritty, dark atmosphere of the source material by Wagner and Ezquerra. The violence isn’t over-the-top; it’s raw and impactful, and Urban plays Dredd as a truly imposing figure, not just a guy cracking jokes while dispensing justice. It’s a much more faithful and compelling adaptation, honestly.

One of the most effective aspects of Dredd is its setting: almost the entire movie unfolds within the Peach Trees building. This limited location allows for a relentlessly fast pace and a growing sense of dread. It’s similar to Die Hard, but set in a futuristic world and with a much more striking and brutal style. The trailer gives a good sense of what to expect.

Interestingly, Karl Urban’s Dredd never takes off his helmet during the film, unlike Sylvester Stallone’s version, which caused a lot of debate back in 1995. By keeping the helmet on, Urban’s Dredd stays truer to the original comic book character in several ways.

Will ‘Dredd’ Ever Get a Sequel?

Lionsgate

Unfortunately, a sequel to the movie Dredd probably won’t happen. Although the writer hoped to make a series of three films, the first one didn’t earn enough money in theaters to make it worthwhile. It cost about $40 million to produce, but only brought in $41 million at the box office, effectively ending any plans for future installments.

It looks like another reboot of Dredd is in the works. In 2025, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Taika Waititi and Drew Pierce were developing a new Dredd movie. However, there haven’t been any updates since then, so it’s uncertain if the project is still happening. For now, fans can re-enjoy Karl Urban’s excellent performance in the 2012 film, which is available on Pluto TV.
