Kate Winslet almost had a royal fashion scare. 

Kate Winslet, known for her role in Titanic, shared a story about meeting King Charles III in 1995, recalling a near embarrassing moment with her outfit.

Kate remembered on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that when she first met him, he attended the premiere of Sense and Sensibility when she was just 20 years old. She hadn’t fully processed that she was actually going to meet him, and she’d completely forgotten she was wearing a very sheer lace dress.

Luckily, Kate reacted quickly and avoided accidentally revealing too much while bowing to Prince Charles.

“I’m so glad I had a coat on,” the 50-year-old said. “Because as he approached, all I could think about was protecting myself, and I ended up shielding my chest with it like a cape.”

I was so thrilled to hear Kate’s meeting with King Charles – especially after everything that happened with Queen Elizabeth II in 2022 – went wonderfully! It was amazing to learn she’s been asked to meet with him again, and even more incredible that she was able to help Meryl Streep prepare for her first time meeting a royal. Kate really knows what she’s doing!

Meryl and I were walking and she asked me, ‘Do you think we need to curtsy?’ when we were about to meet the king at the King’s Foundation Awards ceremony. I replied, ‘Definitely, we have to curtsy.’

Kate recalled a moment of worry when she and Meryl Streep discussed how to properly greet royalty. “We were really panicking because we weren’t sure what the correct etiquette was – we knew we had to curtsy, of course.”

Kate Winslet chose to go first, hoping to calm Meryl Streep’s nerves.
