So, a samurai Western within the John Wick universe? It seems the people making decisions about that world have delivered just that. This leaves us with a lot of questions. Primarily: how did this happen? What was the reasoning behind it? And when can we expect to see it?
In a recent interview with Variety as part of their ’10 Screenwriters To Watch in 2025′ series, Austin Everett – the writer adapting Joseph Eckert’s novel Traveler for Paramount – revealed a surprising new project. He’s developed an original samurai Western story set within the John Wick universe. “That’s probably all I can say right now,” he explained, leaving fans curious about how this unique idea will connect to the existing story. While none of our questions were directly answered, we’re definitely excited to see where this unusual premise leads.
If Done Right, The Potential Spinoff Could Have A Big Payoff
The John Wick series has seen other stories expand its universe, including Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas (which unfortunately didn’t perform well financially), set between John Wick 3 and the fourth film. Currently, an unnamed animated prequel and a story focusing on the character Caine are also being developed. However, it’s clear that John Wick has become recognized as a truly iconic action hero, and the main films with Keanu Reeves are what drive the franchise’s success in terms of both revenue and audience. It’s also been suggested that significant adjustments may be needed in how these films are made if Keanu Reeves is going to reprise his role as John Wick in a fifth installment.
It’s clear that Keanu Reeves wouldn’t be playing John Wick in a possible new spin-off. However, a unique concept like a Western featuring a wandering samurai – a ronin – could be just what the franchise needs to generate excitement and add a new layer of interest. Westerns and samurai stories already share many similarities (as seen in shows like Blue Eye Samurai), so combining those elements with the complex and action-packed storytelling of the John Wick universe seems like a promising idea – we’d certainly be eager to watch it.
