Director Osgood Perkins continues to make a strong impact in modern horror cinema, earning recognition for his distinctive style demonstrated in films like “Longlegs” and the adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Monkey.” Now, he reunites with production company Neon for an upcoming horror film titled “Keeper,” which features Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland. This movie revolves around a couple whose romantic retreat to a secluded cabin takes an ominous turn. The cryptic trailer for “Keeper” has already sent shivers down the spines of viewers, fueling excitement for another unconventional cinematic journey from Perkins. At San Diego Comic-Con, ComicBook had a chance to talk with Perkins and Maslany, offering insights into what appears to be a thought-provoking horror tale.
Perkins made it clear that the main theme of “Keeper” is an exploration of the most troubling aspects of masculinity. He referred to it as a portrayal of our ugliest behaviors as males. If you prefer terms like ‘patriarchy,’ ‘misogyny,’ or ‘toxic masculinity,’ feel free to use them. Essentially, “Keeper” is a mirror that shows us the worst versions of ourselves as men. At times, we need to confront and acknowledge these aspects as unpleasant, even revolting. In my opinion, that’s what “Keeper” aims to do – show men as gross.
In simpler terms, Maslany expressed that the portrayal in question could be perceived as degrading towards women when considering things strictly from a binary perspective. However, she also emphasized that it’s important to acknowledge the internalized biases or instincts we sometimes overlook or suppress, which is a characteristic of patriarchy. In essence, she was saying that patriarchy exists and that it’s problematic, but her statement wasn’t meant to suggest that all men are bad. Instead, she wanted to highlight the need for change in societal structures.
Osgood Perkins’ Keeper Had an Unusual Production
The unique thematic scope of “Keeper” is matched by an exceptionally dynamic creative workflow that sets it apart from traditional films. During our conversation, Perkins shared that the entire production unfolded swiftly, with each department collaborating seamlessly from the get-go, without a fully developed script to guide them.
Nick Lepard, our friend, improvised the script for the movie simultaneously as we filmed it,” Perkins explained. “So we found ourselves saying, ‘Let’s make a movie set in a house with only two characters.’ And Nick would create the storyline on the spot. He’d check in with us, and if we approved, he’d continue. The overall vibe of the project was like we were making it up as we went along, with all departments working together at once. I was meeting with Tatiana, Nick was writing the script, and our producers were scouting for locations all at the same time. We had no budget or time, and it felt like we were creating an abstract painting.
Osgood Perkins, son of the renowned star Anthony Perkins from Psycho, has established himself as a filmmaker known for his unique style of chilling, gradual horror films. Following directorial works like The Blackcoat’s Daughter and Gretel & Hansel, his career hit new heights with the 2024 horror-thriller Longlegs, which earned over $100 million at the box office. His subsequent project, an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel titled The Monkey, premiered in February 2025 and grossed more than $64 million worldwide, landing at number two behind Captain America: Brave New World. While it was a commercial success, The Monkey received mixed reviews with critics admiring its brutal kill scenes but remaining split on its combination of grim comedy and horror. Now, with Keeper, Perkins is back to original content, marking another productive phase in his career that solidifies him as a significant force within the genre.
Keeper hits theaters on November 14th.
