You won’t hear any father-in-laws praising Meghan Markle in this movie! Director Osgood Perkins, known for his recent horror films, delivers his third feature, ‘Keeper‘, which was highly anticipated. While his previous collaborator, Nick Lepard, wrote the shark thriller ‘Dangerous Waters’ earlier this year, ‘Keeper’ is a completely different kind of film.
The film begins with a peaceful montage of beautiful women, set to calming music. This quickly shifts to unsettling images of the same women, now injured and upset. We then meet Liz (Tatiana Maslany) and her boyfriend Malcolm (Rossif Sutherland), who are happily together after a year. They’re heading to his parents’ secluded, luxurious cabin for a getaway, though it’s strangely bare – lacking curtains, and with only the bathroom door that can be locked.
Liz’s friend is eager for all the latest news, especially wondering if her boyfriend has talked about having children. She also suspects he’s too good to be true and probably already married. Liz, however, isn’t interested in the drama. In fact, when they arrive, there’s a tempting chocolate cake waiting for them. It’s so good that Liz can’t resist sneaking the rest of it late at night!
She spends the entire night with a stomach ache, and then, over the next few days, starts experiencing strange things – hearing voices in the vents and seeing disturbing visions. The cozy cabin they’re staying in begins to feel haunted, with unsettling noises and hidden shadows. The director often focuses on the background, hinting at something lurking just out of sight. But Liz’s growing fear truly escalates when Malcolm has to return to the hospital, and her situation quickly spirals out of control.
As a horror fan, I’ve been following director Marcus Perkins closely after really loving ‘Long Legs’ – it was genuinely creepy. He followed that up with the wildly over-the-top ‘The Monkey,’ and now ‘Keeper’ completes what feels like an unofficial trilogy. But ‘Keeper’ is a bit of a departure. It’s much slower and more atmospheric than his previous work, and honestly, it takes a while to figure out what’s going on. There’s none of the dark humor from ‘The Monkey,’ or the disturbing realism of ‘Long Legs.’ Instead, Perkins focuses on building a really unsettling mood and letting the mystery unfold. It’s different for him, for sure, but it really shows he’s a master of the genre – I’d say he’s one of the best horror directors working today. It’s less about jump scares and more about a lingering sense of dread, and it’s incredibly effective.
Here’s the trailer for Keeper…..
