Kelis Shares Glimpse Info Life in Kenya After Relocating With Her Kids

Kelis isn’t just bringing the boys to the yard.

She’s been growing her own produce to beautify the farm. More than a year after moving from California to a secluded farm in Kenya, the singer known for “Milkshake” shared both the benefits and challenges of living in the East African nation.

In a recent Instagram video, Kelis, 46, shared her positive experience with the people of Kenya, describing them as incredibly friendly and helpful. She noted that locals are always willing to assist with things like car problems or directions. Beyond the welcoming atmosphere, Kelis also highlighted the convenience of services like Uber, Uber Eats, and Amazon, as well as the availability of typical entertainment options such as movie theaters, shopping malls, arcades, and bowling alleys.

Because the singer, known as Tasty, lives in Kenya with her children—16-year-old Knight (from her relationship with Nas), 9-year-old Shepherd, and 5-year-old Galilee (with her late husband, Mike Mora)—she appreciates that her family has access to a vibrant and active community.

However, the country’s progressive lifestyle isn’t the only detail that inspired her to move there.

She added that the healthcare is both high-quality and surprisingly affordable, especially since she doesn’t have health insurance. She also noted that starting and running a business is straightforward, with plenty of opportunities available.

Kelis, with her long-standing passion for farming, is also drawn to Kenya’s expansive landscapes, which she describes as beautifully untouched and countryside-like.

As for her least favorite aspects of the country?

Kelis shared in an Instagram video that the roads are in terrible condition, with potholes so severe they could damage a car. She also pointed out dangerous, unmarked speed bumps and a broken drainage system that causes flooding when it rains.

The musician, known for being direct, went on to say that the city’s garbage collection is terrible. They also complained about the high costs of shipping and importing goods, and described the local car dealerships as a really bad experience.

Even with the challenges, Kelis cherishes her experiences and memories from Kenya, especially from Nairobi, and wouldn’t exchange them for the world.

She clarified that her post wasn’t about comparing Kenya to the United States, but rather offering insights for Kenyans living abroad. She also expressed her strong belief that Kenya remains one of the best countries in Africa.

As a longtime fan, it was really sad to see The Ellen DeGeneres Show end in 2022 after 19 seasons. The reports of a difficult workplace and the internal investigation that followed were heartbreaking, and it led to a lot of changes behind the scenes. It was great to see Ellen back doing what she loves with her Netflix special, For Your Approval, which came out in September 2024. But honestly, hearing her talk about leaving Hollywood altogether was tough – it felt like the end of an era for someone who’s brought so much joy to so many of us.

During her recent stand-up tour, Ellen DeGeneres told her audience that she plans to retire after her upcoming Netflix special. She stated, “This is the last time you’re going to see me.” Following this announcement, Ellen and her wife, Portia de Rossi, moved to England in November 2024. Ellen confirmed to Richard Bacon in July 2025 that the move was prompted by Donald Trump’s reelection.

Tyra Banks, the host of America’s Next Top Model, decided to move to Australia partly to focus on her ice cream company, SMiZE and Dream. She explained on Today with Jenna & Friends that her business had been primarily supplying ice cream to places like airlines and cruise ships, and she’d been traveling to Australia frequently to oversee production at a large facility there. She quickly fell in love with the country during her visits.

She also recognized Australia as a promising market for her product, noting that the top three countries for ice cream consumption are the United States, New Zealand, and Australia.

Ultimately, Banks relocated to Australia with her son, York (whose father is her ex, Erik Asla), and her boyfriend, Louis Bélanger-Martin, stating that Australia has been a wonderful experience for her and her family.

Eva Longoria, known for her role on Desperate Housewives, has moved from Los Angeles and now divides her time between Mexico and Spain with her husband, José Bastón, and their son, Santiago. She explained to Marie Claire that while she spent her adult life in LA, the city had changed, and the pandemic accelerated that shift. Issues like homelessness and high taxes contributed to her decision, though she emphasized she doesn’t want to criticize California.

Longoria clarified in an interview on The View: Behind the Table podcast that her move wasn’t politically motivated by the election. She stated it was due to work opportunities, beginning with filming Land of Women in Catalonia, followed by Searching for Mexico, and then returning to Spain. She’s been living there for years now and dislikes the idea that her decision is being framed as political.

Despite the move, Longoria remains busy with her career, recently appearing in Only Murders in the Building and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Road Trip. She also expressed feeling fortunate to be able to leave the US, acknowledging that many Americans don’t have that same opportunity and feels anxiety and sadness for them.

Actor Richard Gere has relocated from Chicago to Spain with his family. He shared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in November 2024 that his wife, Alejandra Silva, who is from Galicia, encouraged the move, and they plan to live in Madrid for several years. Gere is enthusiastic about how this will benefit their young sons, Alexander and James, who are already bilingual and will thrive in the new environment. He also has an adult son, Homer, with his former partner, Carey Lowell. In an interview with Elle España in January 2025, Gere stated the family is happier than ever and is currently enjoying a positive period in their lives.

Singer Christina Milian and her family have settled in Paris. She’s been with her French husband, Matt Pokora, for seven or eight years, and for the past three or four, they split their time between the US and France. They recently made the permanent move so their children – Violet (from a previous relationship with The-Dream), and sons Isaiah and Kenna (with Matt) – could attend school in France. Milian feels it’s a wonderful opportunity for them. She shared with TopMob that her kids are thriving, are fluent in French, and she’s enjoying a balanced lifestyle – active days and work during the evenings due to the time difference. She describes their life in Paris as magnifique – or wonderful!

Lindsay Lohan is frustrated by the ongoing speculation surrounding her departure from Los Angeles. She recently explained that a demanding work schedule combined with intense media attention in the early 2000s created a difficult situation.

“A lot of my work was overshadowed by the paparazzi, which was really annoying,” Lohan told Bustle in March 2024. “I wish that hadn’t happened. It became a story on its own, and I wanted to escape that. I knew people wouldn’t focus on my work unless there wasn’t another story to chase.”

While she’s since lived abroad – first in London, then Dubai, and even opened beach clubs in Greece – Lohan also wanted to create a life outside the public eye.

Lindsay Lohan admitted she worried she might never find love, wondering if that part of her life would ever happen. She realized she needed to focus on herself before things started falling into place and she could embrace the opportunities she truly wanted.

Eventually, she did find love with Bader Shammas, marrying him in 2022 and welcoming their son, Luai, in 2023.

Although they currently live in Dubai, Lindsay hasn’t left acting behind. She’s continued to appear in films like Our Little Secret, Irish Wish, and Freakier Friday.

Josh decided to leave Hollywood after some careful thought. He explained to People magazine in July 2024 that Hollywood isn’t just a location, but a way of life. Being surrounded by people constantly focused on the film industry, he felt, would limit his perspective. He wanted a more diverse life.

“I’ve always wanted to be around people doing all sorts of different things, things that would take my mind off work and help me grow in new ways,” Josh said. “That’s what makes life interesting to me.”

So, Josh, his wife Tamsin Egerton, and their four children moved to the countryside in Hampshire, England. He told The Guardian in July 2024 that time flies with a big family, and while life might seem simpler, it’s filled with what truly matters. Despite the move, Josh has continued to act, appearing in films like Verity, Fight or Flight, and Trap.

If you don’t follow Jesse on social media, you might be surprised to learn he no longer lives in Los Angeles. In a February 2025 interview with CBS News Sunday Morning, the A Real Pain star revealed he’s lived in Indiana for the past ten years, finding it a more comfortable and stable environment. Despite being an Oscar nominee, Jesse lives a relatively normal life with his wife, Anna Strout, and son, Banner. He explained that he avoids social media and doesn’t spend much time networking within the industry. With a teacher for a wife and a son who isn’t particularly interested in movies, Jesse feels removed from the pressures of constantly evaluating his status in Hollywood.

Eliza Dushku, known for roles in shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the movie Bring It On, announced in September 2024 that she’s now a certified psychedelic-assisted therapist and is continuing her education in the field of mental health.

She explained to Boston Magazine that she was able to change her life’s path to prioritize her own well-being, with the goal of then helping others heal. She felt it was important to share her personal journey and the sense of peace and passion she’d found, as she now clearly understood this was her true calling and purpose.

The actress best known for playing a character on The Flintstones shared that she moved to Ireland with her son, Clay, in January 2025. She’s currently working on becoming an Irish citizen because her grandparents were from there. While she mentioned recent political events as a factor in her decision to move, she hasn’t ruled out the possibility of returning to her home country in the future.

In a TikTok video, she shared that she misses her children, friends, and life back home. She’s currently working on building a new life in her current country, and she and her family will think about returning to America when it’s a safe and equitable place for everyone.

Evangeline Lilly, known for her role in Ant-Man and the Wasp, has said she’s stepping away from acting for an unspecified period after two decades in the business.

In a June 2024 Instagram post, Evangeline shared how happy and peaceful she feels while pursuing her dreams. She expressed gratitude for her good fortune, explaining that while it can be daunting to choose a path different from what’s expected – like prioritizing purpose over money and recognition – living authentically brings a deep sense of satisfaction instead of fear.

However, she’s not ruling out a return to Hollywood completely, saying, “I could see myself going back someday, but right now, I’m happy where I am.”

Since finishing his role in the 2019 Netflix series V-Wars, the actor best known from The Vampire Diaries has been focusing on a personal mission: fighting climate change by working to improve soil health around the world.

Ian, who has two children with his wife Nikki Reed, took a break from acting over four years ago to focus on raising his family and developing his businesses. He was also working to release two documentaries: Kiss the Ground (2020) and Common Ground, both of which highlight the importance of regenerative farming. He shared this with TopMob News in November 2023.

Looking ahead, the actor explained that he envisions himself as a rancher, focused on building lasting brands – like his bourbon and wellness company. He’s deeply committed to sustainable farming and healthy soil practices, values he and his family prioritize. He shared that this is his long-term goal and the reason behind his passions, stating, ‘This is who I am and what I’m working towards.’

I was really surprised to hear Miranda Cosgrove talk about this on her podcast, Empty Inside! She shared that a few years ago, she made the decision to step away from acting. Now, she’s pouring her energy into writing and directing, which is amazing, and of course, continuing with the podcast. It’s so cool to see her explore these new creative paths!

Jennette shared that she feels deeply ashamed of some of her past acting roles, detailing these feelings in her 2022 memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died. She admitted to resenting her career, feeling unfulfilled by the parts she played and describing them as cheesy and embarrassing. Having worked on those shows from age 13 to 21, she was already embarrassed by her work by the time she was 15, feeling it didn’t impress her friends.

Despite past difficulties, she hasn’t ruled out returning to acting. She explained to TopMob News in October 2022 that writing her book helped her consider acting in a new light, free from past pressures. She believes she might be open to it again, but only if she were to write a role specifically for herself.

It seemed like a pretty easy decision. The chance to marry Prince Harry, devote ourselves to meaningful charitable work, and wear the Queen’s beautiful tiaras would make leaving Hollywood completely worthwhile.

Similar to Grace Kelly’s transition from Hollywood to Monaco, Meghan Markle left her life and acting role in Toronto (known for the show Suits) to join the British Royal Family. Now that she and Prince Harry have stepped down as senior royals and live in California, Meghan is returning to professional life. This includes a production deal with Netflix, where she released the 2022 docuseries Harry & Meghan and will launch a lifestyle show, With Love, Meghan, in 2025. She’s also ventured into podcasts and created her own brand, As Ever.

After starring in over 40 films since she began her career with 1994’s The Mask, the actress really needed a rest when she finished filming Annie in 2014.

She told Gwyneth Paltrow that she realized she wanted a different lifestyle. After years of intense work and filmmaking, she felt burnt out. She explained that making a movie is all-consuming – you work long hours every day for months and have no personal time.

Cameron Diaz had many interests she wanted to pursue, including writing – she followed up her successful book, The Body Book, with The Longevity Book – and starting a family with her husband, Benji Madden. While she told InStyle in 2019 that she didn’t miss acting and was focused on wellness, it seems she might be open to returning to performing at least one more time.

Jamie Foxx explained that he and others had to really ask and plead with Cameron Diaz to star in the upcoming 2025 Netflix movie, Back in Action. He said, “We begged her, ‘Please do one more!”‘ He added that they all love her and have been eagerly anticipating her return, believing the film will be amazing.

The actor stated firmly that he wouldn’t return to the show after completing his five years on Empire. When asked by Extra about his plans before the sixth and final season aired in 2019, Terrence Howard said, “I’m finished with acting. I’m done with pretending.”

Despite appearing in a few projects since then, the Oscar-nominated actor announced his retirement from acting again in 2022 while promoting his Peacock series, The Best Man: The Final Chapters. He explained to ET that he felt he’d given his all as an actor and now wants to focus on watching and supporting new talent, rather than simply repeating performances he’s already mastered.

Even with those previous concerns, Howard has continued to act, appearing in shows like Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist and the Netflix film Shirley. He also has several other projects planned for the future.

After his character, King Joffrey, died on the show in 2014, Jack Gleeson, then 21 years old, told Entertainment Weekly that he was leaving acting. He explained that he had been acting since he was eight, but simply wasn’t enjoying it as much anymore.

Jack, no longer a young star, felt some of the joy had faded. He explained that turning a hobby into a job changes things. “Before, it was just something fun to do with friends or during the summer,” he said. “I still like it, but making a living from it alters how you feel about it. It’s not that I dislike it, it’s simply not my career goal.”

After a six-year hiatus, Jack returned to acting in 2020 with a role in the BBC series Out of Her Mind. Since then, he’s also been in films like Rebecca’s Boyfriend and In the Land of Saints and Sinners, and TV shows including Safe Harbor and The Famous Five.

When Jennifer Aniston, known for her role in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, married actor Kevin Kline in 1989, they made a plan to balance their careers and raise their children, Owen and Greta. Despite not appearing in a live-action film since 1997 – he even turned down a quick appearance in the 2016 Ghostbusters remake – Rick remains a beloved figure, as shown by the strong reaction to news of an assault he experienced while walking in New York City in 2020. Now, fans have something to celebrate: he’s returning to the screen alongside Josh Gad in the upcoming Disney reboot, Shrunk.

After marrying fashion designer Adam Kimmel in 2010, actress Drew Barrymore suggested she was considering stepping back from acting. She told Vogue that most acting roles require intimate scenes, and she wasn’t comfortable with that. While she felt her relationship was strong, she believed any challenging work needed to be truly worthwhile to justify the difficulty.

After her son, Martin, joined his sister, Louisanna, in 2014, she firmly decided to step away from acting. She told Us Weekly in 2016 that she felt like an outsider and was now focused on being a mom. She also helps her husband, Kimmel, with his work and enjoys painting as a hobby, explaining, “I think that’s mainly why I stopped [acting].”

She’d starred in popular shows like Ally McBeal, Nip/Tuck, Arrested Development, and Scandal. After those roles, the Australian actress began to feel like it was time for a change.

Turning 45, I started thinking about taking on a new, really challenging project that I hadn’t tried before,” she shared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2018. “I had a good idea of what my acting career would look like for the next decade or two, so I decided to leave acting and start my own business instead.

Her company, General Public, which creates art for everyone, was almost complete—she just needed to finish one last piece.

I spoke with Mitch Hurwitz, the creator of Arrested Development, and told him I wouldn’t be interested in a fifth season because I had decided to stop acting. He was very understanding and supportive, and we had a good talk. Surprisingly, he ended up writing me into five episodes anyway.

It’s understandable why, after winning three Oscars, Daniel Day-Lewis felt he’d achieved his goals. Following his sixth Academy Award nomination for his 2017 film, Phantom Thread, his team announced his retirement from acting. He expressed deep gratitude to everyone he’d worked with and to his audiences over the years, and stated that this was a personal decision, with no further comments to be made.

Just as Daniel Day-Lewis had announced his retirement from acting, a new project drew him back in. In October 2024, Focus Features revealed he would star in Anemone, a film he co-wrote with his son, Ronan Day-Lewis, who is also directing it.

Bridgit Mendler, known for her role in Good Luck Charlie, left acting in 2018 to focus on her education. She earned both a master’s degree and a PhD from MIT, and later attended Harvard Law School.

On top of everything else, Bridgit founded Northwood Space, a startup focused on building ground stations for sending and receiving data from satellites. She became the company’s CEO in February 2023.
