Kerry Washington Explains Decision to Keep Her Family Life Private

Kerry Washington has no plans on turning the camera on her home life.

The Scandalous alum and her spouse Nnamdi Asomugha have chosen to keep their family life with their two kids, Isabelle, aged 11, and Caleb, aged 9, out of the public eye, and initially, this decision wasn’t straightforward.

Kerry expressed during an interview with InStyle on September 8 that it was initially tough for her. She’d often see a picture of her child and think, “This photo needs to be shared, but I don’t want to post it!” Once her children started school and she realized she couldn’t shield them around the clock, it became quite frightening for her.

Kerry, being a parent along with Nnamdi to a teenage girl, emphasized that our children should have the freedom to express their true selves rather than being defined by society’s expectations.

Certainly, albeit maintaining a low profile in public life, the main character from “Little Fires Everywhere” revealed that this approach also influenced her personal relationship with her spouse, specifically their love life.

She expressed that despite their prominent public presence, they maintain a level of privacy. Approximately two years ago, at a fashion show in Italy, the staff snapped a photo of them. When she admired the image and suggested sharing it online, he seemed surprised.

She mentioned, “We’ve been married for ten years without sharing a single picture of us together in public. We are both actors who strive to reveal authenticity beneath our character’s masks. It seems we prioritize safeguarding our genuine selves over public display.

Kerry, despite not featuring her children on social media, openly discusses the values she and Nnamdi are instilling in them. In an interview with Marie Claire in 2023, she expressed, “I strive to be the role model they need to help them become their best selves.

Recently, Kerry slightly deviated from her family’s privacy guideline by publicly acknowledging Nnamdi on the launch of his latest movie, “The Knife”. Specifically, during the summer, she highlighted him in the film and shared her admiration for his acting skills as an NFL veteran-turned actor.

In an Instagram video posted on August 12th, she stated that she was present alongside the writer, director, and lead actor of ‘The Knife’.

In addition to sharing a humorous video, Kerry posted, “He refused to grant me an interview… Yet he did recommend, ‘Check out @theknifefilm in theaters on August 15th!’
