Kevin Costner in Talks to Play Bill Clinton in United Nations Series

Kevin Costner, known for his role in Oliver Stone’s JFK, is in discussions to play Bill Clinton in the upcoming TV series United. The show, which will be co-produced by the United Nations and directed by David Raymond (known for Night Hunter), focuses on real stories of humanitarian work. While the series is expected to include other historical figures, details are still limited.

According to Variety, Kevin Costner is set to star in and produce a new series, United, with Leonardo DiCaprio and the United Nations. The show will focus on real-life stories of courageous individuals working to improve the world. Currently, no details about where to watch the series or when filming will begin have been announced.

How Will ‘United’ Impact Costner’s Other Projects?

New Line Cinema

Beyond his role in JFK, Kevin Costner has appeared in several films with political themes, including Thirteen Days, Swing Vote, and Hidden Figures. He’s also known for Westerns like Dances with Wolves, Wyatt Earp, and The Postman. More recently, Costner starred as John Dutton in the popular Paramount series Yellowstone. Created by Taylor Sheridan, Yellowstone has become a worldwide hit, earning high ratings and award nominations, and has led to spin-off series 1883 and 1923, which explore the stories of other Dutton family members.

After Kevin Costner left Yellowstone during its fifth season, he focused on developing Horizon: An American Saga, a large-scale Western film he’d been planning since the 1980s. The project evolved over time, growing into a four-part series. Originally, the first two films were intended for release on HBO Max, but plans changed, and they are now scheduled for a theatrical release.

The first film in the Horizon: An American Saga series, Chapter 1, came out in theaters in the summer of 2024. Originally, the plan was to release Chapter 2 just a month after, and while Chapter 2 has been shown at film festivals, it doesn’t have a firm release date yet. Because Kevin Costner intended to make Chapters 3 and 4 as well, his involvement with another project, United, could create difficulties for the future of the Horizon saga.

The buzz around Costner’s work on United could potentially create enough interest to get Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 released and allow the rest of the planned four-part series to be made. This is a similar risk to the one James Cameron took with the Avatar films, which also faced delays and expansions, and with the third Avatar movie coming out next month, Cameron’s bet seems to be working out. However, since Horizon doesn’t have the same worldwide popularity as Avatar, Costner might be getting ahead of himself.
