Kevin Feige Demanded That 1 Marvel Project Be Rated R

A Marvel Studios insider revealed that Kevin Feige specifically requested one project be rated R. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) had largely stuck to PG-13 ratings, it recently began exploring more mature themes, as seen in shows like *Deadpool & Wolverine*, *Echo*, and *Daredevil: Born Again*. However, Feige always believed one particular title needed to be designated for adult audiences.

According to series creator Bryan Andrews, Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, insisted from the start that the new *Marvel Zombies* series be rated R. Andrews shared this information in the show’s official press materials, highlighting Feige’s enthusiasm for the animated series.

According to Andrews, Kevin and Brad Winderbaum are both big fans of zombies, and they agreed from the beginning that any new zombie-related project needed to be very mature and unrestricted, earning a TV-MA rating.

Kevin and Brad are big fans of zombies, and they agreed that if they brought them back, it wouldn’t be just for a single episode. They want to create a separate, substantial project with a mature, unrestricted rating – something equivalent to TV-MA.

Marvel Studios’ Brand Winderbaum, who oversees streaming, television, and animation, also explained that they wanted the series to have complete creative freedom and avoid any restrictions.

He understood that a zombie series had to be grand in scope and explore the classic themes of hope and hopelessness found in great zombie narratives.

We gave Bryan, Zeb, and the team complete creative freedom. We wanted the Marvel Zombies series to be truly grand in scope and explore the classic zombie story themes of hope versus hopelessness.

Even though *Marvel Zombies* takes inspiration from classic zombie stories, it still manages to feel unique.

Andrews describes the series as a unique take on the zombie genre, blending fantasy adventure with a type of storytelling rarely seen in Marvel projects.

This zombie show is unlike anything else Marvel has done – it’s a fun, fantasy-driven adventure. Everyone involved really enjoyed breaking new ground, and we hope fans feel that energy. We want viewers to get everything they were hoping for, be surprised by things they didn’t see coming, and ultimately, be completely thrilled with the experience.

I’m really excited about Marvel Zombies, which just dropped on Disney+! It’s a four-episode story that takes place in an alternate universe – basically, what if a zombie virus broke out amongst the superheroes? It follows the surviving Avengers as they try to deal with the fallout and, you know, find a way to survive in this pretty grim, zombie-filled world.

Will There Be More R-Rated Marvel Projects?

With *Marvel Zombies*, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is expanding into R-rated content, and it’s likely we’ll see more mature stories like this in the future. This marks a new direction for the interconnected world of Marvel comics.

Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, mentioned in July 2025 that the MCU might include more movies with mature ratings, explaining they would consider them on a case-by-case basis when the story calls for it.

I’m really excited because Marvel is definitely moving forward with more mature content! We already know that next year we’re getting a second season of *Daredevil: Born Again* and a special presentation focusing on *The Punisher*. It sounds like we’re in for some seriously intense, action-packed MCU stories!

Currently, the only other Marvel movie planned with an R-rating is *Blade*. After a lot of delays and difficulties in development, it looks like *Blade* is finally moving forward and will be the next R-rated Marvel film released in theaters.

What’s next for R-rated content at Marvel Studios is still unclear. However, after Marvel Studios was open to giving Marvel Zombies an R-rating, it’s likely they’ll consider it again if a future project calls for it.
