Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, acknowledges that the studio may have been producing an excess of both movies and TV shows, a sentiment that many Marvel fans have shared over time.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, they simply responded with “More is more” when it was pointed out that the initial three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (from Iron Man to Avengers: Endgame) encompassed approximately 50 hours of storytelling, while the six years following have expanded to a staggering 127 hours of film and television content.
“That’s too much,” Feige said.
Feige characterized the current Marvel productions as a period of “testing, growth,” and “growth in scope.” He also acknowledged some projects that, despite being made with noble objectives by the company, didn’t resonate as intended.
The strong urge came from the company to move forward with these projects, and since people have been eagerly waiting for Ms. Marvel and Oscar Isaac as Moon Knight for quite some time, why not give them what they want? So, we found ourselves in a situation where we couldn’t resist the opportunity to make these characters come alive. It seemed like an exciting prospect!

Feige also shared his thoughts on why a film like Thunderbolts*, despite receiving excellent reviews (including from this particular site), underperformed financially, earning only $382 million globally, one of the lowest grosses in the history of the NYU.
Feige mused, “That growth might be why some viewers say, ‘Do I really need to know every detail about all these characters? It was entertaining before, but now does it feel like a requirement?’ He continued, “Some people are still grappling with the idea of, ‘I suppose I needed to watch those other series to grasp who this character is…’ However, if you watch the movie, that wouldn’t be necessary. Yet, we must ensure the audience realizes that watching the movie is sufficient.
Marvel is reducing their movie output slightly, but instead of four films in 2025, there will be three next year (2026), and just one for 2027 has been announced so far. However, they have already launched two series on Disney+ this year – Daredevil: Born Again and Ironheart, with three more – Eyes of Wakanda, Marvel Zombies, and Wonder Man – planned for the second half of 2021. So it seems that they’re not reducing their output significantly, at least not yet.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps opens in theaters next Friday.
