For approximately 17 years, Marvel Studios, led by President Kevin Feige, has been striving to achieve a specific goal within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and that ambition will be realized in December 2027 with the release of Avengers: Secret Wars. From the outset, Marvel encountered some limitations when it came to storytelling due to having sold the film rights for its most prominent characters like Spider-Man, X-Men, and Fantastic Four to other studios. Consequently, the MCU primarily revolved around the Avengers and lesser-known characters. Despite the MCU’s immense popularity with an Avengers focus, fans have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of these absent heroes in the narrative.
In “Captain America: Civil War,” Spider-Man joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) due to a joint production agreement with Sony. More recently, Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, making it possible for X-Men and Fantastic Four to also become part of the MCU. Sadly, these characters won’t fully interact with the wider MCU until next year in “Avengers: Doomsday.” However, by December 2027, a dream that Marvel Studios has pursued for the past 17 years will finally materialize, transforming the MCU forever.
In a chat with Perception back in May 2017, Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, shared their main aim for the Marvel Cinematic Universe: to recreate, in movies, the immersive reading experience that comic book enthusiasts have enjoyed for years.
At that point in time, achieving his goal – introducing Spider-Man into the MCU – exceeded his most ambitious expectations. However, with the Fantastic Four and X-Men tied up at 20th Century Fox, it seemed improbable that everything would be fully accomplished. Yet, he kept a hopeful spirit by saying “stranger things have happened.
I’ve been striving to recreate the thrill comic book enthusiasts feel when reading their favorite books on screen, and I must admit, we’ve surpassed my wildest expectations over the last decade. Bringing Spidey into Civil War and Infinity War is a dream I never thought would become reality, as I believed the chances were incredibly small. As for the characters yet to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there are currently no plans, but who knows what lies ahead in the future?
Remarkably, the comments by Feige were made back in May 2017, a mere seven months prior to the official announcement of Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox (which included the X-Men and Fantastic Four) in December of that same year. Although the deal was finalized in March 2019, it wasn’t until 2021 that the first character from the previously owned Fox universe, Jonathan Majors’ Kang, made his debut in Loki Season 1.
Despite the Marvel Studios introducing the Fantastic Four and X-Men characters in movies like Deadpool & Wolverine, Avengers: Doomsday, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Kevin Feige hasn’t achieved his goal of having these characters permanently integrated yet. This is because these characters have only appeared from other universes, and although they will cross over in the 2026 film Avengers: Doomsday, they won’t be residing on a single Earth just yet. For now, that remains unrealized.
The MCU Will Be More Complete Than Ever After December 2027
As it stands now, everything will be different starting from December 2027, with “Avengers: Secret Wars,” a film that Kevin Feige hinted at during his conversation with Variety. He stated, “It really lays the groundwork for what’s to come in the future.
We’re not only using that [story] to complete the tales we’ve been spinning since Endgame, but equally crucial, it lays a solid foundation for what’s coming next. In essence, ‘Endgame’ was all about conclusions, while ‘Secret Wars’ signifies new starts.
He hinted that although “reboot” can be an intimidating term, the Marvel Cinematic Universe post-“Secret Wars” signifies a “refresh,” significantly unifying the Marvel universe within a single “continuity.
Restarting a system can be daunting and it means different things to different individuals. However, we’re considering something similar like a fresh start or a single timeline scenario. In the ‘X-Men’ universe, this change will occur next.
After “Avengers 6”, which is set to release in 2027, implies that in the future, characters like the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man will all coexist on a single world.
Additionally, Feige subtly suggested that celebrated characters such as Tony Stark and Steve Rogers might follow suit. Although Feige acknowledged that replicating iconic performances can be challenging, he pointed out that it has been accomplished before, alluding to the example of Sean Connery’s James Bond role.
Amy Pascal and David Heyman are currently on a mission to find a new actor to portray James Bond. David Corenswet, the newly cast Superman, was fantastic and will continue to be so. It’s challenging for any actor to fill such iconic shoes, especially since Sean Connery was exceptional as James Bond. After all, how can they possibly find someone to match that legendary performance?
Over the past 17 years, Marvel Studios has been working tirelessly to assemble their diverse collection of superheroes and villains into one universe, starting with the inception of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Through strategic acquisitions and production agreements, this dream will soon become a reality in Phases 7 and the upcoming saga. This paves the way for many important relationships from the Marvel Comics to be brought to life on screen.
It’s worth noting that while Marvel Studios hasn’t yet given a solo film to nine specific characters, they’ve largely succeeded in creating a single universe where most major characters from Marvel Comics reside.
Presently, characters such as Tony Stark and Black Widow are absent from the scene, but much like no one stays deceased in Marvel Comics, there’s always an opportunity for them to reappear with a new cast member, particularly following the post-“Secret Wars” reboot.
It’s uncertain which narratives might unfold next, but there’s buzz suggesting a potential collaboration in the form of a single film featuring The Avengers, X-Men, and Eternals.
