Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver are hanging up their scrub caps.
Okay, big news for all you Grey’s Anatomy fans! After almost two decades of bringing Dr. Owen Hunt and Dr. Teddy Altman to life, Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver are saying goodbye to the show. Their final episode will be the season 22 finale on May 7th – it’s going to be emotional, but they’ve given so much to the series, and I’m sure it will be a fitting send-off.
Kevin, who has been on Grey’s Anatomy since 2008, shared that the show has been a significant part of his life, both professionally and personally. He expressed deep gratitude for the opportunities he’s had playing Dr. Owen Hunt and directing episodes, saying it’s been a shaping experience and a privilege to work with such a talented team.
Kevin, who played a love interest for Sandra Oh’s character Cristina Yang and also portrayed Teddy, shared his appreciation for the show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes. He expressed excitement about the future, saying he’s eager to create new projects, tell different stories, and apply what he’s learned to the next chapter of his career.
Kim shared a message on Instagram saying she’ll always cherish Teddy. Teddy first appeared on the show in 2009, during seasons six through eight. Kim left the series in 2012, but returned for season 14 in 2017 and became a main cast member the next year.
Kim shared that it’s been a wonderful experience bringing Shonda’s writing and the work of our talented writers to the screen. She especially thanked current showrunner Meg Marinis for her strong leadership and heartfelt dedication, and also recognized the incredible work of previous showrunners like Krista Vernoff, who played a key role in developing Teddy’s character over the years.

Teddy and Owen have a complicated history together, full of ups and downs. They even got married in season 18, but later divorced before season 22. Last season, Teddy began a relationship with Dr. Cass Beckman (Sophia Bush), while Owen has been married twice before – to Cristina in season seven and Dr. Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) in season twelve.
Recently, the connection between the US Army veterans seems to be back on—possibly for good. The show’s creator, Shonda, has hinted that Kim and Kevin’s departures won’t necessarily be due to a sad event.
Shonda Rhimes shared that it’s been wonderful to see Owen and Teddy’s relationship grow over time – they always gravitate back to each other. She said it feels both happy and sad to finally give them the fulfilling ending they’ve earned.
The departures of Owen and Teddy will likely be very upsetting for many dedicated viewers of Grey’s Anatomy. If you’re interested in other surprising exits from TV shows, continue reading.
