As a huge fan of Kevin Smith‘s work, I was so excited to hear he’s hinting at Ben Affleck returning for Dogma 2! I know, I know, his character Bartleby… well, let’s just say things didn’t end well for him in the first movie. But Smith seems to be suggesting he’ll be back somehow. The sequel will apparently follow Bartleby and Matt Damon’s Loki – those two fallen angels – and their desperate attempt to get back into Heaven, which, naturally, could have disastrous consequences for everyone on Earth. It sounds like it’s going to be wild!
In June 2025, Smith said a sequel to Dogma was possible, but it would need to honor the original film’s conclusive ending. That means respecting the fate of Affleck’s character, who is destroyed by God in the first movie.
In an interview with Comicbook.com, Kevin Smith shared his hopes to feature Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in a potential Dogma 2. While acknowledging the film is still some time away, Smith discussed his ideas, specifically wanting to explore what ultimately happened to the characters Bartleby and Loki – whether they found redemption or are now fallen angels trapped in Hell.
I definitely have more projects I want to do before I stop filmmaking. I like to plan ahead and work on things for a long time – I’ve been developing Moose Jaws for a decade, and we’re almost ready to go. However, a sequel to Dogma has the advantage of an established brand, which makes it easier to get funding and produce. It will be much simpler to get Dogma financed than Moose Jaws.
That’s a really insightful question! After the movie Dogma was released, people often wondered about the fate of the characters Bartleby and Loki. My answer depends on your perspective. If you’re forgiving, you might believe they found redemption. But, as someone raised Catholic, I see it as they faced punishment for breaking divine laws. That idea actually connects to what we’re doing next. I’m glad you picked up on that!
During the interview, Smith also shared that he’d discussed another movie with Affleck, and even suggested he might be open to appearing in a follow-up to a View Askewniverse film. While there’s no official word yet on whether they’ll work together again, Smith alluded to a potentially exciting new storyline without giving away too many details.
Smith currently has many unreleased projects, including Moose Jaws, the last film in his True North series, which he’s been developing since 2015. He’s also been working on a sequel to Mallrats called Twilight of the Mallrats since 2020, something he’s wanted to do for about ten years.
With both Affleck and Damon having busy schedules, and considering how far along other projects are, it’s hard to say when a Dogma 2 might actually get made. It would require coordinating everyone’s availability, including potentially bringing back other cast members from the original. Since there haven’t been any recent updates, it could be a long wait.
Given that Smith is thinking about a story where Bartleby and Loki find themselves in Hell, a Dogma 2 could be a worthwhile sequel, exploring what happens after the first film. Because the destinies of these two fallen angels remain open-ended, a new movie could offer a fresh and interesting story.
