Kevin Smith recently shared some news about a possible Dogma 2 and what Ben Affleck might do in it. His 1999 film, Dogma, was a funny and popular take on Catholicism, featuring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as two fallen angels trying to return to Heaven. Their success, however, would have disastrous consequences for humanity, creating a major problem. While the original film had a clear ending, fans have been hoping for a sequel for years.
For a long time, making a sequel to Dogma seemed impossible because of legal complications regarding the rights to the film. But recently, those issues have been resolved, and a Dogma 2 is now a possibility. Last year, writer and director Kevin Smith hinted that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon might be involved, although they weren’t officially committed. So, what’s the latest update on the sequel?
Kevin Smith Teases Dogma 2‘s Story

I recently interviewed Kevin Smith about the new 4K version of Dogma, and of course, I asked him about a possible sequel. He’s famously talked about making another Mallrats movie for years, but it never came to fruition. Smith knows some of his projects get stuck in development, so the question is: will Dogma 2 ever actually be made?
I definitely plan to make another film before I retire, but I like to have projects well in development. I’ve been talking about Moose Jaws for a decade, and we’re getting close. However, a sequel to Dogma would be easier to get made because people already know the name. It will be much simpler to secure funding for Dogma than for Moose Jaws.
I recently chatted with Ben Affleck at his studio, Artists Equity, about a different project, and we ended up talking about Dogma. I’ve been openly discussing a potential sequel, so he was aware of the idea. It doesn’t sound like anything is definitely happening yet, but it got me thinking: if we did get to make Dogma 2, how would that even work? Remember how Bartleby, Affleck’s character, died at the end of the first film? Would we find him in Purgatory, or even Hell, in the sequel? It’s a fun thought experiment!
That’s a really insightful question! After the movie Dogma was released, people often asked what happened to the characters Bartleby and Loki. My answer depended on your perspective. If you’re forgiving, you might believe they found redemption. But, as someone raised Catholic, I always figured they were facing punishment for breaking divine rules. That idea actually influenced what we did next. I’m glad you picked up on that!
Dogma is out now on 4K UHD. Would you like to see a sequel? Let me know in the comments!
