Kevin Smith, the director known for his cult classic films, is still working on a sequel to his 1999 comedy, Dogma. While he hopes to bring back many of the original actors, some roles will need to be recast. Sadly, Alan Rickman, who played the angel Metatron in the first film, passed away in 2016. Smith recently revealed who he intends to cast as Metatron now – and it’s a surprising pick.
So, I was listening to Kevin Smith on the SlashFilm podcast, and he dropped some exciting news about Dogma 2. He’s already thinking about casting for the role of the film’s version of an angel, and he revealed who he has in mind: Helen Mirren! He described her as being very similar in energy to Alan, his character from Dogma. It’s not a direct portrayal of Metatron, but Smith sees her embodying that same powerful, otherworldly vibe. He admitted it wasn’t about finding someone who looks the part, but about capturing a certain spirit. Honestly, while Mirren’s done some wild roles, Dogma 2 feels like a big leap even for her. But Smith clearly has a lot of respect for her work and is writing the part specifically with her in mind, which is pretty cool.
I first met her years ago at an Empire movie awards event with Alan. I remember thinking I missed having Alan around, and then it struck me that Adam Driver resembled a younger, taller version of Alan Rickman.
I initially dismissed the idea, but then I started to consider Helen Mirren. She’s one of my favorite actors, and I actually met her and Alan once. As a writer and a romantic, I tend to find connections where I can, and that led me to think she’d be perfect for the role. So, I began writing the part with Helen Mirren in mind.
Kevin Smith Pushed the Boundaries With ‘Dogma’ (And Caused Outrage Along the Way)

When Kevin Smith’s film Dogma came out in 1999, starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, it sparked a lot of different opinions. Some people praised its daring and unique comedic take on religious stories, while others were upset about the portrayal of God as a woman. Singer Alanis Morissette played God in a surprisingly captivating performance. However, the backlash from religious groups was entirely predictable.
As a huge fan of Kevin Smith, I’m already incredibly excited for Dogma 2. He’s always been one to take risks, and I get the feeling this film will be no different. The idea of a gender-swapped Metatron is brilliant, but honestly, it’s his concept for the Devil that really has me intrigued. He’s hinted that he wants to ask someone he previously worked with on Yoga Hosers – an Academy Award nominee, no less – to take on the role of Lucifer. Seriously, this is shaping up to be something special!
Years ago, I worked with a really sweet and talented young boy who later became very famous. Now, whenever I’m writing a character who is meant to be evil, I always picture Austin Butler.
After seeing his performance in Dune, I was really impressed with his portrayal of Feyd. But the Devil we’re creating is different – not just coldly villainous. He’s more charismatic and alluring, almost like a rock star. I think Austin Butler would be perfect for capturing that vibe.
