Kevin Smith Wants Helen Mirren to Replace Alan Rickman in Dogma 2

Kevin Smith recently discussed a potential Dogma 2 and how he would approach recasting Alan Rickman, who famously played Metatron in the first film. Speaking on the /Film podcast, Smith revealed his surprising choice for the role: Helen Mirren. He believes she’s the perfect person to take over the part, and it’s likely a choice fans won’t see coming.

I really had Helen Mirren in mind while writing this,” Smith explained. “She has a similar energy to Alan [Rickman]. She isn’t playing the character Metatron directly, but she embodies that role in this film. I met her years ago with Alan at an Empire movie awards event. When I realized Alan wasn’t available, I even considered Adam Driver because he reminded me of a younger, taller version of Alan Rickman.

The most straightforward approach seemed clear, but then Smith came up with a different idea. He explained that he quickly dismissed it, realizing a past connection he had with Helen Mirren and Alan. As a writer and a romantic, he was eager to find a reason to work with her. This led him to envision the role specifically for Mirren, and he began writing the part with her in mind.

Alan Rickman was a unique performer, and it’s hard to find someone who can fill his shoes, especially with his particular style and dry wit. If someone new is going to take on the role, it’s best to make a bold choice and surprise the audience. Helen Mirren as Metatron would definitely be a striking and unexpected pick.

Kevin Smith Still Hopes To Make Dogma 2

For a long time, the film Dogma was difficult to find, as legal issues kept it off streaming services and prevented new DVD or Blu-ray releases. Now, it’s available in 4K Ultra HD, and while you can’t stream it with a subscription, you can buy it digitally from places like Amazon, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.

Perhaps that will give Smith the momentum he needs to see the sequel into production. .

Smith explained that rewatching Dogma is both inspiring and motivating for him. He’s currently working on a follow-up project, timed to coincide with the film’s 25th anniversary. He pointed out that filming began in 1998, meaning he’s been developing the idea for about 27 years, having written the script at age 23, just before making Clerks.

If Dogma 2 happens, it will have been a long time in the making. The original idea was called God, and I’ve been thinking about these characters and this story for over 30 years. Revisiting them now, without ever planning to, has been incredibly fun and spontaneous. It’s a completely playful process, and the audience’s reaction fuels that creativity every night.

You can’t stream Dogma on subscription services, but it’s available to buy digitally or on DVD/Blu-ray.
