Jason Statham is a major action movie star. He’s starred in everything from surprise hits like The Beekeeper to huge blockbusters such as The Meg, and has even worked alongside screen legend Robert De Niro. He’s truly done it all in his career.
The 2011 action thriller looked promising on paper – Jason Statham protecting Robert De Niro from dangerous criminals? It sounded like a guaranteed hit! With a strong cast including Clive Owen, Yvonne Strahovski, and Paul Mendelsohn, it had all the ingredients for success. However, it didn’t perform well in theaters. Luckily, Tubi is now offering the film for free, giving fans another chance to enjoy it.
‘Killer Elite’ Feels Like An Old-School Action Thriller
In the action thriller Killer Elite, directed by Gary McKendry, Jason Statham plays Danny Bryce, a former special forces operative living in hiding. When Danny discovers his old mentor (Robert De Niro) has been taken hostage, he and his team must undertake a dangerous and nearly impossible mission to rescue him.
Inspired by Ranulph Fiennes’ 1991 novel The Feather Men, Killer Elite delivers exactly what fans expect from a Jason Statham action movie. With exciting locations, a strong cast, and fantastic fight scenes, it feels more like a tough, old-school ’70s action film than a typical modern blockbuster – and that’s a big part of what makes it enjoyable.
Part of the film’s appeal comes from watching Jason Statham and Robert De Niro act together, even if it’s just for a short time. Statham was gaining recognition for action roles in movies like Death Race, Crank: High Voltage, and The Expendables, establishing him as a strong on-screen presence. Seeing him alongside De Niro felt like a symbolic handover, a moment recognizing a shift in action movie stars. They didn’t exchange any playful dialogue, instead maintaining a tough, serious demeanor that let the audience know they were seeing something noteworthy.
‘Killer Elite’ Failed to Make a Killing at the Box Office
The film Killer Elite, released on September 23, 2011, marked the debut of Open Road Films. Since then, the company has released many popular movies, including End of Watch, Nightcrawler, and the exciting action thriller Kandahar, starring Gerard Butler.
Open Road Films had a difficult beginning with the film Killer Elite. Though it cost $70 million to make, it only earned $56 million at the box office, making it a financial disappointment. Fortunately, Open Road didn’t fund the movie entirely on its own, as they were mainly responsible for distributing it in the U.S. With support from AMC and Regal Entertainment Group, the company was able to remain stable and even expand, despite Killer Elite not achieving the success they had hoped for.
So, is it a good movie? Absolutely! It has everything Jason Statham fans enjoy, and it’s even better with Robert De Niro. Seeing these two action stars together is a real treat. If you haven’t seen this surprisingly good film, definitely watch it on Tubi when you get a chance.
