In the comic book “Immortal Thor,” author Al Ewing hinted at significant events, but readers were unsure just how dramatic things would become. The story starts with a conflict against Toranos, the Utgard-Thor. Characters from Utgard and Loki, who’s been casting spells here and there, have been essential to the plot. A grim future for Thor is unveiled, one that concludes with him in Utgard, primarily to thwart an attack by these old gods. Throughout his journey, Thor leveraged his power as the All-Father to keep the Utgard gods at bay. He partnered with Skurge the Executioner to confront the evil deities. Despite overwhelming odds, Thor emerged victorious. However, since the beginning of this mission, it was said that Thor would meet his end, so even as he triumphed and the universe finally granted him his desire, Thor met an untimely demise.
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I’d put it this way: “In the grand spectacle that unfolded, Loki struck down Thor with an arrow imbued with Eternity. Yet, that was merely the prologue. The 25th issue of ‘Immortal Thor’ unveiled the consequences of Thor’s demise. The narrative commences with Utgard-Loki and Loki dissecting the strategy behind Loki’s lethal act against Thor. You see, the death of Thor carries profound implications, and to grasp the ‘why’, we must delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding Thor’s death, to decipher the intricate web that Loki is weaving.
Thor Was the Only Guardian Against Utgard
Loki’s scheming has significantly shaped the narrative of “Immortal Thor”. It started during the initial story arc of the book where Loki manipulated Thor into proving themselves worthy of Mjolnir, enabling Loki to join the Thor Corps and assist them in defeating Toranos. Loki also persuaded Thor to construct a new weapon, Tormod, and after the confrontation with Toranos, Loki subtly controlled Thor’s actions, helping him overcome his adversaries while readying Thor for upcoming battles. Loki’s actions led to Enchantress being reinstated in Thor’s inner circle against Thor’s wishes, which resulted in Loki’s exile from Asgard. Since then, Loki has been absent from the story, orchestrating events behind the scenes as part of their new role as the God of Stories. We are unsure of Loki’s true intentions — I suspect that they might be the one narrating “Immortal Thor” because they are the God of Stories, and it seems like something Al Ewing would do — but we recently learned that Loki was positioned on the Black Bridge to Asgard from Utgard, and they killed their brother after he shattered the most powerful beings in Utgard.
In a swift turn of events, Loki’s adversary, Utgard-Loki, questions Loki’s intentions, as if Loki was engaged in some sort of trickery. Loki, ever mysterious, instructs Utgard-Loki to stay attentive and departs. This cryptic reply aligns perfectly with Loki’s character in the comic series Immortal Thor, leading to two significant occurrences – Skurge acknowledging his failure in protecting Thor, and Utgard-Loki facing a critical decision. With Thor absent, there’s nothing to deter Utgard-Loki from launching an attack on Earth or Asgard. Thor has served as the protector of the Ten Realms, standing as the sole obstacle between the Utgard deities and the rest of existence. It turns out that the Utgard gods are ancient beings, exiled from the universe during the war against Chthon long ago. The only thing that has restrained them is Odin’s power. Toranos was able to infiltrate because Thor was unaware of his role as a buffer between Utgard and the rest – one of many secrets that Odin concealed. Thor’s demise leaves Utgard-Loki with the opportunity to traverse the Black Bridge into either Asgard or Midgard. However, Utgard-Loki hesitates due to his uncertainty about Loki’s scheme. This momentary pause actually averts disaster for all of creation, as the Utgard gods are kept at bay.
Thor’s Death Almost Spelled Disaster… But Leads to Another
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’ve been anticipating the imminent demise of Thor for quite some time now, as Loki has been steering his brother towards this grim fate, keeping his motives to himself. The death of Thor paved the way for the Black Bridge to Utgard-Loki, yet even the trickster god knew that something more was afoot than just him opening up a pathway to the cosmos for his kin. This wasn’t Loki’s plan at all; instead, he had wagered on Skurge exacting revenge against those responsible for Thor’s untimely end. In a surprising twist, Skurge brought an abrupt end to Utgard-Loki’s path by shattering both the Black Bridge and the Rainbow Bridge.
Author Al Ewing has some significant plans for the character Thor. Severing connections between realms carries more serious repercussions than initially perceived. This separation fundamentally altered the essence of the universe, erasing the Asgardians from the chronicles of the Marvel Universe. Thor’s demise paved the path for Utgard, but this passage was blocked in an extremely dramatic fashion.
