King and Conqueror release date confirmed with first-look images of all-star cast

As a fervent movie aficionado, I am thrilled to share that the eagerly awaited historical drama titled King and Conqueror will grace our screens this coming August bank holiday weekend. You can indulge in the entire series – all eight episodes – by streaming them as a box set on BBC iPlayer starting from Sunday 24th August.

In addition to revealing the premiere date, the BBC has additionally unveiled some captivating new photos from the starlit drama. These images provide a more detailed perspective on James Norton portraying King Harold II and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as William the Conqueror in their roles as adversaries.

In the new images, both men are depicted in similar poses, seemingly bathing, and we also get glimpses of some key supporting characters such as Emily Beecham playing Edith Swan-neck, Clémence Poésy portraying Matilda, Eddie Marsan taking on King Edward, and Juliet Stevenson embodying Lady Emma.

King and Conqueror sets the scene before the Battle of Hastings, as described by the BBC as “a narrative of a conflict that shaped the course of a nation – and a continent – for a millennium. This epic tale delves into the origins, which can be traced back for many years, and unfolds through two interconnected royal families vying for power across two lands and a tumultuous ocean.

Harold from Wessex and William from Normandy were two individuals fated to clash at the Battle of Hastings in 1066; two companions initially with no intentions of claiming the English throne, who eventually found themselves compelled by unforeseen events and personal ambition to wage a war over its control.

In this show, Clare Holman portrays Gytha, Luther Ford takes the role of Tostig, Bo Bragason plays Queen Gunhild, Indy Lewis acts as Margaret, Elander Moore enacts Morcar, Geoff Bell brings Godwin to life, and Jean-Març Barr assumes the character of King Henry.

He mentioned that creating the show was an intense process for him since he was also responsible for its production. It took approximately six to seven years of development and discussions with various directors and writers before it finally came together, making the journey particularly lengthy.

He exclaimed with enthusiasm, ‘That’s an untold story, one that has surprisingly never been depicted in films. It’s fascinating, isn’t it? We’ve never witnessed a film about the Battle of Hastings. So, yes, I’m thrilled about this potential project!’

Lately, he shared with The Guardian that his understanding of that particular era was quite shallow until he started working on the project. He admitted that his knowledge was merely a general overview, something he picked up during his school days.

He mentioned that prior to the battle, Harold and William were not known to have a relationship. However, it turned out they had been friends and allies for several years. This was surprising because as Europe was being divided, they both found themselves destined for conflict, leading to one of them unfortunately meeting their end on the battlefield.

It’s astonishing to consider no one has attempted it previously. One of the factors contributing to our extensive development time was this very aspect.
