James Norton, the actor, finds it surprising that the countries bordering England through the English Channel weren’t the ones who produced “King and Conqueror,” a BBC drama that delves into how Harold of Wessex (portrayed by Norton) and William of Normandy (played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) ultimately faced off at the Battle of Hastings.
In my view, what truly sets him apart is his insight that the tale isn’t solely about the battle itself, but rather the bond these men forged in the days leading up to the conflict.
It’s worth noting that Harold and William used to be friends, as they fought together against the Baron of Brittany in Normandy.
Norton noted that these two had been friends for quite some time. At a certain stage in their relationship, they came to understand they’d likely find themselves in a war zone, with one ultimately losing their life. Such a narrative carries a deeply dramatic essence, he remarked.
We had an outstanding template for this series, yet it seems strange that it hasn’t been shared. The reason might be that the French, who indeed emerged victorious, haven’t told this story.
“I don’t know why it’s up to us, but it’s a privilege to be able to be the ones to tell it.”

In addition to delving into the central theme, King and Conqueror also investigates the dynamics among two sets of romantic partners.
He noted that Matilda [of Flanders], who was married to William, was well-educated and highly influential, making her quite a force to be reckoned with, since William was not.
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but reflect on the profound tale of Harold and his beloved wife, Edith. Though their story is etched in history, discussing it without spoilers is a challenge. However, let me share this: we (the English) bear the sorrow of their shared fate, as Harold met an untimely end, leaving Edith to mourn his loss. She was there from the start, standing steadfast by his side until the very end. Their love for one another shone brightly, a beacon in the darkest of times.
According to Norton, the fundamental reason behind Harold and William, who were deeply entwined by their passion for power and the crown, finding themselves on opposing sides of the battlefield can be traced back to their personal relationships and familial ties.
