King Charles III’s Christmas speech to break from tradition once again with another major relocation

This year, King Charles III will give his traditional Christmas message from Westminster Abbey.

Every year, the Queen usually gives her speech from one of her homes – places like Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, or Sandringham. But this year, it’s different! I was so surprised to learn it was filmed inside the beautiful Lady Chapel at the historic church. It’s a really special setting, and I think it adds something extra to the message.

I’m hearing the King’s speech will focus on life’s journey – he’s calling it a ‘pilgrimage’ – and how the experiences we have along the way can offer insights into what’s happening in the world today. It sounds like he’ll be drawing parallels between personal growth and current events, which is a pretty interesting angle.

Okay, so the filmmakers made a really smart choice with the setting. They moved the action to Westminster Abbey, which isn’t just a pretty building – it’s a place steeped in history, specifically where people used to come on pilgrimage to honor Edward the Confessor. It adds a real weight and meaning to the scenes, knowing that’s what this location historically represents.

This won’t be the first time the King has filmed his Christmas speech outside of a palace. Last year, he filmed at Fitzrovia Chapel and spoke about the health challenges he and the Princess of Wales were facing.

This chapel is the final resting place of fifteen former kings and queens, including famous figures like Elizabeth I, Mary I, and Charles II. It also houses the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, an order currently headed by King Charles.

The tradition of the monarch giving a Christmas message began in 1932 with King George V, who gave a speech over the radio.

Queen Elizabeth II gave the first-ever televised speech in 1957. These speeches became a tradition where people could hear the monarch’s thoughts on important events happening in the country and around the world.

In his first Christmas address as King in 2022, Charles III spoke about the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, from the Quire within St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.
