The classic animated show “King of the Hill” is back after a long hiatus, with its new season now available on Hulu. The mastermind behind the series revealed that Disney has made some adjustments for the show’s revival. Fifteen years since the original ended, “King of the Hill” returns with some differences compared to the original, including aging characters and modifications in sound for the contemporary era.
Since King of the Hill handled certain topics during its initial run on Fox similarly to other adult animated shows back then, it didn’t stand out as boldly as its contemporaries. However, when transitioning to streaming and working with Disney, there were necessary adjustments made, including changes to language in the new episodes, as revealed by its showrunner to The Hollywood Reporter.
How King of the Hill Changed With Disney
In simpler terms, Saladin K. Patterson, the creator of King of the Hill, stated that earlier versions of the show, with adult animation, often went beyond typical boundaries in their content. However, King of the Hill itself didn’t go as far as some other shows in this regard, instead focusing more on social commentary.
When they began creating new episodes for Hulu under Disney, everyone involved wanted to preserve what made the original series unique. Yet, even though Hulu executives were fans of the original show, there were still certain boundaries they had to respect when making the new episodes.
However, there were instances where following the Disney approach imposed certain boundaries, which I believe Fox wouldn’t have had. Despite being on Hulu and streaming, this platform has broader standards and practices than Fox. Yet, our commitment to staying true to the show meant we avoided excessive use of explicit language, but we do push some boundaries. Our characters do curse in ways they can’t on broadcast. In this case, Hulu required us to remove all instances of the F-word as they don’t want the TV-MA rating, and that’s acceptable.
How Much Does This Change King of the Hill?
As an avid fan of the classic King of the Hill series, I’ve noticed some distinct alterations in the latest season. Compared to other contemporary adult animated shows, these changes aren’t immediately apparent, but they do introduce a sharper, edgier tone in terms of humor. There are instances where characters contemplate suicide, use stronger language, and deal with more mature themes, yet it doesn’t stray too far from the original show’s essence.
The animated series “King of the Hill” has been receiving positive feedback from both critics and viewers since its Season 14 debut. However, as of now, there’s no official announcement about whether the show will continue with a new season. There might be some alterations in the revived version, but it seems that these changes have been well-received by fans, indicating they have improved the series.
