The revival series of “King of the Hill” on Hulu has introduced a fresh perspective on the character Bobby Hill, and the showrunner shared insights into how they determined what his adult life would be like. This summer saw a new season of episodes from this classic show, which unveiled significant alterations for each character due to a time leap of about ten years. As a result, fans were treated to older versions of every character at different stages in their lives.
In a new iteration, “King of the Hill” presented its audience with a 21-year-old Bobby, now established as a chef in Dallas. This significant transformation encompasses both age and location for the character. As revealed by showrunner Saladin K. Patterson to Popverse, the creative team deliberated extensively on how to develop Bobby’s character while balancing fans’ expectations for the revival of the show. Eventually, they arrived at their innovative approach.
How King of the Hill Decided to Change Bobby
Regarding Bobby’s character, we need to decide how much dating scenes we want to include for him. Is this something that fans would enjoy? Given he’s a young adult, relationships are likely part of his life. Also, we considered his living arrangements – will he and Joseph share a place, or might he live independently? After careful thought, the team decided it would be best to set Bobby in a new location within Dallas, allowing him to have his own stories.
As a die-hard fan myself, I can understand why it seemed fitting for him to establish his restaurant in Dallas independently. However, we were faced with the challenge of determining just how much autonomy he should have, considering the expectations of fans who yearn to witness these cherished characters once more. Essentially, we recognized the desire of fans to revisit these beloved characters, but we also wanted to exploit the opportunity to mature the storyline and explore what makes sense for them in their current circumstances. Many aspects of this were still under discussion and decision.
How Much Does Bobby Actually Change?

In paraphrasing this text, the emphasis is on maintaining a familiar and beloved quality while introducing fresh stories. Regarding Bobby’s voice in the adult version, Patterson, speaking with Cinemablend, highlighted the importance of retaining Pamela Adlon as the voice actor due to fan expectations: “Greg and I discussed what fans would find most appealing when they return to this series,” Patterson explained. “We both prefer having Pam maintain her portrayal of Bobby, without altering it or raising the pitch; we believe it will be most comfortable for fans to hear a voice they recognize as their own – it’s Pam. In essence, why change something that works so well?
The popular animated series “King of the Hill” hasn’t made any announcements about a new season as of now, but it’s been one of Hulu’s biggest successes in recent years for animated shows. If you want to see how much character development Bobby has experienced over the years, you can currently stream all 14 seasons on Hulu.
