King of the Hill’s Renewal Raises a Big Question About John Redcorn’s Future

After a 15-year hiatus, King of the Hill is returning for three more seasons on Hulu. With the revival comes a challenge: figuring out how to handle the character of John Redcorn going forward. While most of the original voice actors have returned, sadly, not all were able to reprise their roles due to unforeseen circumstances.

Jonathan Joss, the voice of John Redcorn on King of the Hill, sadly passed away before Season 14 aired this summer. However, he did record lines for the revival, allowing him to reprise his role. Now that he’s gone, fans are wondering how the show will handle the character of John Redcorn going forward. Since Joss likely completed some work for Season 15, the show may either recast the role or retire the character altogether in future seasons.

What Is King of the Hill Going to Do With John Redcorn?

The fourteenth season of King of the Hill revisits John Redcorn after almost a decade, alongside other beloved characters, with Joss continuing to voice him. We learn he and Nancy co-host a popular online show, he’s helping Joseph with his land and a horse, and he’s even started a business selling red corn. It’s clear the writers intended Redcorn to be a continuing presence in the show, and the revival series fittingly concludes with a scene focused on him, followed by a tribute to the actor who played him.

The revival of King of the Hill is handling the passing of its voice actors in two ways. After Johnny Hardwick’s death during production, the show was able to use the original voice of Dale Gribble for a while, then Toby Huss took over the role for the remaining episodes and future seasons. For some other key characters, the producers considered simply not including them in the new episodes at all. This means the show could go either way with the character of Redcorn – they might continue to use his voice or retire the character.

Will John Redcorn Be Recast?

Depending on how much of the new season Joss Whedon was able to record, we could see a similar delay as with the King of the Hill revival. Hulu initially ordered 20 episodes, but it took until this fall for the second episode to be confirmed. This suggests Joss may have recorded some episodes for the first season, but future seasons will likely be different.

Originally, Victor Aaron voiced John Redcorn in the first season of King of the Hill before his death. After that, Joss took over the role, and he may continue to do so. However, it’s more probable that a new actor will be cast to voice the character instead of retiring him completely. Though it’s possible King of the Hill could choose to discontinue the character as a tribute to Joss.
