Just like that, this year’s edition of The Game Awards has come and gone within a blink of the eye.
That striking statue you saw was a hint at Larian Studios’ next Divinity game. And those teasers referencing “The Old Republic”? They were for a new project from Casey Hudson, the creator of Mass Effect and the original Knights of the Old Republic.
It was a jam-packed show filled with several mind-blowing reveals and some feel-good award wins.
For fans of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, The Game Awards were disappointing this year. Despite being nominated for three awards – including Game of the Year, Best RPG, and Best Narrative – the popular, realistic medieval RPG didn’t win any of them.
It’s no surprise that fans are disappointed and frustrated with how quiet and uneventful things turned out.
KCD2 Fans, We See You And Hope You’re Doing OK
A Reddit post called “Warhorse deserved better” has gained a lot of traction, with almost 8,000 upvotes and over 1,000 comments. The overwhelming consensus is that Warhorse didn’t get the outcome it deserved, especially considering it didn’t win anything.
One popular commenter expressed disappointment that Tom McKay, who they felt did excellent work, wasn’t even nominated, leading them to believe KCD2 had no chance of winning.
People following the discussion also noted that even fans of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 sympathized with those disappointed about Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, and some were upset that the sequel received no news at all.
“Oh bro, as an Expedition 33 fan I feel sad for KCD2,” one gamer wrote.
Many people felt the game deserved to win “Best RPG” at the very least. They thought its gameplay was excellent and that it really captured the spirit of the role-playing genre.
Someone commented that they’ve never been impressed with the VGA awards (similar to the Oscars), but felt Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 deserved more recognition. While they enjoy E33 and acknowledge its quality, they think the lack of nominations for the voice actors in KCD2 proves these awards prioritize hype and popular appeal over actual merit.
The rest of the online discussion is full of fans expressing similar disappointment. While many acknowledge that Expedition 33 was worthy of its award nominations, they feel its victory came at the cost of recognizing another deserving project.
EP33 definitely deserved the vast majority, if not all, of its nominations. However, a few awards probably should have gone to different games, and thankfully, some actually did.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning deserved recognition as the top RPG – it really excelled at the core elements of the genre. However, the game was still a success, and the orchestral soundtrack was a particular highlight.
It could be worse, we could be Titanfall fans RN,” one user summed up.
