Following comments from Warhorse Studios co-founder Daniel Vávra acknowledging the growing role of AI, a translator/editor who contributed to Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has stated they were dismissed from their position as the company opted to use AI instead.
A translator named “Max H,” who verified his identity to the moderators of the KingdomCome subreddit, worked on the sequel and its downloadable content starting in July 2022. He translated everything from in-game dialogue and quest details to item names, and occasionally helped with marketing materials, converting it all from Czech to English.
“Simply put, if you’ve ever played KCD2 in English, you’ve quite likely seen my work.”
On March 27th, Max’s role was eliminated as the company aimed to improve efficiency and cut costs. It appears Warhorse Studios is now turning to AI for translations. While Max hadn’t completely dismissed the possibility of this change, he admitted he’d hoped his contributions would have protected his position.
It was difficult to share, but he felt it was important to discuss the impact of AI, particularly on Warhorse Studios, the company behind the successful Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. He wanted people to understand how the growing use of AI affects those in the gaming industry – and to show how much the company values both its employees and environmental responsibility.
Even so, he requested that fans avoid harassing anyone at the studio or unfairly reviewing their games. He explained, “I don’t want that to happen at all. I simply want people to understand what’s really happening within the games industry.”
Despite recent criticism of AI – like the negative reaction to Nvidia DLSS 5 – many companies are still finding ways to use it. Some games, such as Horizon Steel Frontiers, heavily rely on AI for both code and artwork. Others, like The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, are using AI to quickly create initial versions and temporary assets, but the developers promise these will eventually be fully replaced with content created by human artists.
It’s unclear how much Warhorse plans to improve its translation technology, so don’t anticipate perfect translations in their next game when it comes out.
