For some time now, Kingdom Hearts 4 has been announced, and its director, Tetsuya Nomura, has recently hinted at the themes we might encounter in this upcoming title. On a social media platform like X, where Square Enix is celebrating the 15th anniversary of Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, they also had Nomura discuss the concept of standing at a crossroads.
According to Nomura, it seems that his comment will be unveiled together with the teaser trailer for BBS from the hidden movie in KH2. Following this video’s lead, I’d like to share some insights about a critical juncture with you.
As per Nomura’s explanation, the idea of a junction or crossroads where characters anticipate someone else is a significant element woven into the themes of Kingdom Hearts. This theme recurs frequently across the series. For instance, in a celebratory video, three Keyblade bearers are seen waiting for someone at a crossroads, and in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, Sora encounters a character cloaked in black and receives an invitation to Castle Oblivion at such a crossroads.
In the video, you’ll find three individuals brandishing Keyblades, standing in armor at a junction, as he explains. It’s notable that encounters at crossroads are a common theme in the world of Kingdom Hearts.
In the opening of “Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories” (abbreviated as CoM), Sora encounters an individual wearing a dark coat, who subsequently invites him to Castle Oblivion.
In the discussion, Nomura highlights multiple characters intersecting with the protagonist at critical junctures, seemingly connected by destiny. This theme of crossroads is significant enough to ignite the Keyblade War, and in Kingdom Hearts 3, the Lost Masters convene at these crossroads as well. Nomura references an American folklore tale about a young man striking a bargain with the devil to acquire guitar skills, all this happening at a crossroads.
In the game “Kingdom Hearts,” a crossroads is first introduced in “Chain of Memories.” According to creator Nomura, this crossroads symbolizes having to give up something to acquire something else. Interestingly, every subsequent appearance of a crossroad in the series carries the same meaning.
As I delved deeper into Kingdom Hearts 3, it seemed like Nomura was subtly suggesting another Faustian pact happening. It felt like the Lost Masters were gathering at crucial junctures, reminiscent of a secret rendezvous.
However, let’s hold on a moment… When the enigmatic Lost Masters convene at the intersection in Kingdom Hearts 3, they bring both gains and losses with them – a tale to be unfolded later.
Regardless of recurring motifs of crossroads throughout various Kingdom Hearts games, including possibly Kingdom Hearts 4, Nomura has previously mentioned that the upcoming title will function as a fresh start for the series. This move is intended to make it easier for newcomers to jump into the games without being overloaded by two decades’ worth of background story.
Ever since Kingdom Hearts 4 was first announced in 2022, Square Enix has remained fairly silent about it. On the flip side, whispers and rumors suggest that the game could be released as soon as this year. Yet, neither Nomura nor Square Enix have officially confirmed or denied these speculations.
It’s been confirmed that Kingdom Hearts 4 is being built using Unreal Engine 5. This means that the game’s visuals, particularly its lighting and detail, will reportedly surpass those of its predecessors, as noted by Square Enix.
