In the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima for PlayStation 5, titled Ghost of Yotei, it seems that mentions of the game’s setting, characters like Ghost and Jin Sakai will likely be scarce or limited.
In the upcoming sequel, which unfolds approximately 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, Jin Sakai would have already passed away by the time the story begins. Yet, it’s possible that descendants of Jin might still be alive three centuries later. Nevertheless, Sucker Punch seems to have decided against making this a significant plot element in the sequel.
Nate Fox, the creative director, refers to Ghost of Yotei as a “spiritual successor” during his conversation with Game Informer. He emphasizes that playing the first game is not necessary to follow the events in Ghost of Yotei. The character Atsu is recognized as an Onryō, a vengeful spirit, by the people of Ezo due to her persistent survival through numerous attempts at revenge. This gives her an extraordinary reputation that travels ahead of her in the land she explores. In this sense, there are similarities, but it’s a completely unique tale.
According to the latest State of Play presentation, some Ghost of Tsushima enthusiasts have speculated that Ghost of Yotei could link back to the original game through your canine companion. Some believe the wolf might be the reborn form of Jin Sakai, which Jason Connell, the creative director, finds intriguing and appreciates the fans’ creativity.
In the tale spun by the Ghost of Yotei, we meet Atsu, a character seeking retribution against the Yotei Six, who were responsible for her family’s demise. This narrative setup shares some resemblance with Assassin’s Creed Shadows, another game released this year in the same setting. However, concerns have been raised about the likeness between the two narratives. Nate Fox, a key figure in the project, clarified that the revenge quest is merely the beginning of the larger storyline. He described it as “the start – definitely not everything – but it’s an excellent start,” he explained.
