Kingkiller Chronicle Book 3 Updates & Delays: Why The Doors of Stone Is Taking So Long

Both George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire and Patrick Rothfuss’ The Kingkiller Chronicle are famous fantasy series with unfinished storylines. While both authors have worked on related projects since their last main installments (released in 2011 and 2011 respectively), fans are eagerly awaiting the next book in each saga. It’s been fifteen years since the second Kingkiller Chronicle book, A Wise Man’s Fear, came out, and the highly anticipated third book, The Doors of Stone, still hasn’t been released.

We learned the book’s title a long time ago, but the actual novel hasn’t been released yet. Luckily, we’ve had a few short stories to hold us over. The Lightning Tree and The Slow Regard of Silent Things came out in 2014, and in 2023 we got The Narrow Road Between Desires, which is an updated and longer version of The Lightning Tree. But fans are still wondering about The Doors of Stone and why it’s taking so long. Here’s the latest information we have.

Why The Doors of Stone Is Taking So Long

The long wait for The Doors of Stone actually began with issues surrounding A Wise Man’s Fear. Patrick Rothfuss started working on this book series, beginning with The Name of the Wind, way back in 1994, and the first book was finally published in 2007. In an interview with Fantasy Hotlist that same year, he promised the sequels would come out yearly, “one per year.” However, when he revisited A Wise Man’s Fear, he realized it needed substantial revisions, as he explained on his website, PatrickRothfuss.com.

When I started working on the book again, I was surprised by how messy the first draft was. I’d spent years completely focused on The Name of the Wind, and the second book had been neglected. It really needed a lot of work. On top of that, I’d never had to write with a deadline before. Going from writing as a hobby for fourteen years to suddenly being a bestselling author was a big change mentally. It was also a difficult time personally, as my mother had passed away just a few months before the book was released.

The release of A Wise Man’s Fear was delayed until 2011, three years later than planned, which contributed to the hold-up with The Doors of Stone. Beyond the initial delays, the significant changes made in the second book likely meant even more extensive revisions would be needed for the third.

One of the biggest impacts of A Wise Man’s Fear is just how much bigger it is than the first book, The Name of the Wind. We’re talking over 300 pages longer! This expansion really opens up the story’s scope, throwing in tons of new characters, ideas, and places – we see Kvothe venturing out into the world and even into the fae realm. Honestly, it reminds me a lot of the challenges George R.R. Martin is facing with The Winds of Winter. When you expand the narrative this much, it makes it incredibly difficult to start wrapping things up and moving towards a satisfying conclusion.

Adding to the delay of the third book, Rothfuss also began writing a separate story set in the same world, called The Tale of Laniel Young-Again. He finished more than half of it before pausing to concentrate on The Doors of Stone – a pattern similar to what happened with the published novellas.

What Patrick Rothfuss Has Said About The Doors Of Stone

Patrick Rothfuss has talked about The Doors of Stone from time to time, including at a 2025 convention. According to Winter is Coming, he jokingly told a fan that the third book was currently too long and not ready for release. While meant as a joke, it’s not surprising considering the book still hasn’t been published. However, the fact that he described it as “bloated” is intriguing, suggesting he’s actually written a significant amount of the manuscript – perhaps even too much.

In a 2021 YouTube interview with Maude’s Book Club, he explained that his tendency to overthink things was preventing him from completing the book. He talked about the significant amount of time he’d invested in the series, especially the numerous rewrites for the second book, and admitted he was most worried about potentially disappointing fans who had loved the original. He also shared that he’s been attending therapy and dealing with personal struggles, something he previously discussed during a Twitch stream.

I really want to finish the book and I feel terrible that so many people are waiting. It’s been incredibly stressful, and I’m currently in therapy to deal with it. I started writing it just for fun, never expecting anyone to read it. But now that so many people are counting on it, the pressure is immense. If I didn’t care about the book and my readers, it would be finished already. I feel like I owe it to everyone who loves the story to create something truly special.

I get why it’s taking so long, and honestly, it’s totally understandable. Patrick Rothfuss is a real perfectionist, and I’d much rather he take the time he needs. A rushed book that he’s not happy with wouldn’t be good for any of us fans, would it? As much as I’m desperate to read The Doors of Stone, his health and wellbeing are way more important, and I support him taking care of himself.

Previous updates followed a similar pattern: in 2017, he reported struggling with the writing process, and in 2019, he said progress was being made, though slower than expected. A particularly blunt update came from his publisher at DAW Books, Betsy Wollheim, in 2020. According to Newsweek, she commented on Facebook expressing her frustration, stating she hadn’t seen any new material from him in years – not even a single word of the book.

Even though the book isn’t complete yet, we have been able to hear a portion of it: the prologue. Author Patrick Rothfuss read it aloud during a charity event in 2021, and a recording is available in the video linked below.

The final book in the series has a lot of ground to cover, needing to connect Kvothe’s past as a student with his present life as Kote, resolve the mystery of the Chandrian, and answer key questions like what’s hidden behind the four-plate door and inside the thrice-locked chest. It also needs to reveal whether Kvothe is truly a Lackless and, crucially, identify the king he ultimately kills. Given everything it needs to accomplish, this book promises to be the largest in the series so far, and fans are hoping The Doors of Stone will deliver on that promise.
