Good news for Kirby fans! The beloved character is coming to a new game on the Nintendo Switch 2. Called Kirby Air Riders, it’s a sequel to the popular Kirby Air Ride and updates the original with fresh features.
Whether you loved the original GameCube game or have enjoyed Kirby in any of his other adventures, a new game is definitely something to get excited about.
So, you’re interested in checking out Kirby Air Riders on your new Switch 2? Great! Let’s get you up to speed with the essential details before you start playing.
1. An Expanded Roster of Characters

The original Kirby game had a small number of characters you could play as, but Kirby Air Riders offers a much larger roster. Currently, 20 different characters are confirmed, and each one can copy the abilities of their rivals, just like Kirby himself.
I’m so excited for the new game! We’ll definitely be seeing Kirby back in action, which is amazing, but it sounds like there will be some new characters joining the fun too. A little variety is always a good thing, right?
2. Expanded Fleet of Vehicles
The Kirby series has featured lots of cool vehicles, and we’re excited to announce that many of them are now available in the game! You can easily switch between different vehicles while racing or completing events.
Fan-favorite vehicles are back, and collecting them all will likely provide hours of gameplay. The Transform Star is a great example – it can change between a flying mode and a bike for ground travel, giving you a lot of options for getting around.
3. Dive Into Multiplayer For Some Fun

Players who enjoyed the first game will be happy to hear that Aire Ride, City Trial, and Top Ride are back, and they’ve been updated and expanded to be even more engaging.
Air Ride lets up to six players compete, whether they’re playing together in the same room or online. Top Ride increases that to eight players, and City Trial supports up to sixteen. This variety makes it a great option for different-sized groups and promises plenty of exciting multiplayer action.
4. Get Those Miles In
Kirby Air Riders lets you unlock new ways to customize your character and vehicle simply by playing the game. You earn ‘Miles’ as you play, which you can then use to unlock a variety of accessories.
As you compete against friends and other players on various courses, you’ll likely unlock a lot of new items. We appreciate that the game lets you have fun and earn rewards that let you personalize your experience – it’s a great system.
5. The My Machines Mode

The customization features will be really useful when you start designing and selling unique vehicles in My Machines mode. You’ll be able to personalize all your vehicles and sell designs that you think look great.
You can earn a good amount of in-game money by selling vehicles, and don’t worry, you keep the vehicle after you sell it! It’s a great deal, and customizing classic vehicles from the Kirby series is a really enjoyable way to pass the time.
6. Go On A Road Trip
In Kirby Air Riders, the main story unfolds through Road Trip mode, sending Kirby and his friends on an exciting and eventful journey along a twisting path.
We’re wondering why Kirby, King Dedede, Starman, and the other characters are teaming up, but trailers and gameplay footage might offer hints for dedicated fans.
7. Diving Into Top Ride

Top Ride isn’t just for playing with friends locally – it also has unique items you can unlock. Be sure to try it out to discover cool things like the Kaboom, Drift Flames, Drill Driver, and more!
Top Ride offers a bird’s-eye view of the races in Air Raid mode, making it easy to see everything happening. However, the basic way you play – using your skills to outpace your opponents – stays the same.
8. The Paddock
Kirby Air Riders features a multiplayer lobby where you can hang out between races. You’ll control your rider, move around, connect with friends, pick your next race, change the music, and express yourself with emotes and custom poses.
If you love meeting new people and exploring, you’ll definitely want to check out this Kirby-themed lobby.
9. Swap Relay Race Type

Swap Replay is a special race mode only available in Air Ride. It lets you switch between different vehicles each lap, letting you pick the best one for the upcoming challenges.
You’ll need to experiment with different rider and vehicle pairings. Plus, the ability to team up with friends in local multiplayer can be a huge help when facing difficult races.
10. The Checklist Returns
Kirby Air Ride is bringing back the helpful checklist feature from the original game. It’s a great way to keep track of what you’ve accomplished and see what’s needed to unlock everything new!
The game has many goals to complete in its various modes, and it’s much simpler to track your progress when you can easily see what you’ve already accomplished and what’s left to do.
11. Amiibo Figures

It’s no surprise that Nintendo is making Amiibo figures for beloved characters from the Kirby series. They’ve revealed a variety of figures and vehicles that can be mixed and matched, and will also work with the new Switch 2 console. These figures enhance gameplay through the Figure Player feature.
Plus, changing either your rider or vehicle will update your in-game character to match – it really pulls you into the experience!
12. Miles Of Road To Cover
Okay, so the game is easy to pick up and learn, but don’t let that fool you! There are eighteen different tracks, and they’re packed with challenges. You’ll really need to use both quick reflexes and smart strategy to win. Honestly, it sounds like the gameplay is going to be super fun and addictive – I can’t wait to try and top the leaderboards!
All nine of the classic Air Ride courses are being included in the new game. We’re excited to see updated versions of familiar locations like Fantasy Meadows and the Nebula Belt.
13. Boss Battles

One of the most anticipated parts of the game is the variety of challenging boss battles. These fights will likely demand quick reflexes and skillful gameplay. For example, Robo Dedede can transform between Dedede Mode and Car Mode, constantly changing his attack strategy and keeping players on their toes.
We can’t wait to see what else Bandai Namco and Sora have in store for us in this one.
14. Copy and Special Abilities

As we previously announced, all characters can copy abilities from their opponents. However, these special abilities are unique to each character and are activated by a gauge that fills up as you play. Kirby, for example, has four different special abilities, each linked to a different color you can choose for him.
As a player, I’ve learned that really nailing your Copy and Special abilities is key to winning races. And honestly, I love experimenting with different characters whenever I get the chance! You just never know which one will have that perfect ability to give you a real edge.
15. Global Win Power

Kirby Air Riders encourages players to compete extensively, which could make it challenging for more casual players to enjoy the multiplayer experience. Fortunately, the game’s Global Win Power system is designed to address this issue and create a fairer balance.
Your in-game license shows a skill ranking that changes based on how well you play online. This ranking uses a rainbow color system to show your skill level, and it helps match you with players of similar ability, creating fairer and more enjoyable online matches.
That covers everything about Kirby Air Riders! We hope to see you join the fun on this new adventure!
