The advent of the Nintendo Switch 2 era is marked by a blend of innovative new games and popular titles enhanced with fresh elements. Notably, established games such as “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” have seized the potential of the hardware, with developers leveraging the opportunity to introduce additional content alongside superior graphics and performance. Similarly, “Kirby and the Forgotten Land Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” and “Star-Crossed World,” released in this new era, build upon an already impressive foundation established when they debuted on the original Switch in 2022.
In a significant change for the franchise, Kirby and the Forgotten Land moved from the realm of 2D platformers to a fully-realized 3D world. The game’s plot revolves around Kirby being transported to a mysterious land where he sets out on a mission to save the Waddle Dees, who are under threat from a new gang of baddies called the Beast Pack. If you haven’t played this game on the Nintendo Switch yet, our original review highly recommends it. For those who missed it initially, even with the $80 price tag, it remains an easy recommendation on the Switch 2.

Is Star-Crossed World Worth the Upgrade Price for Kirby and the Forgotten Land’s Switch 2 Version?
It’s highly recommended for new players to try out “Kirby and the Forgotten Land“, but longtime fans might question if the new features justify the cost. Unlike the extra content in Zelda games, which comes with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, this new Kirby content must be purchased separately at a price of $20 for access to the updated Switch 2 elements and the Star-Crossed World expansion.
The narrative for our upcoming campaign revolves around a meteor strike in the game’s universe, causing the Beast Pack to be infected and their powers to change. In this new storyline, titled Star-Crossed World, you’ll revisit familiar places from the main game that undergo noticeable transformations. As players, you’ll explore paths previously unexplored, encountering new challenges while attempting to save a fresh cast of characters known as the Starries – much like the Waddle Dees in the original game.
The game titled Star-Crossed World provides a substantial amount of content, consisting of 12 newly introduced Starry Stages. In my playthrough, it took approximately four hours to progress through these stages and engage with the end boss. However, achieving a perfect score on all stages or completing them without dying multiple times during the challenging finale was not possible for me.
If you’re searching for Kirby content with a bit more difficulty level than usual, you’ll find the entire package quite satisfying. Notably, the developers at HAL Laboratory have introduced a fresh game mode to the colosseum in the game. For those who already purchased Kirby and the Forgotten Land and appreciated its content, this $20 DLC offers an appealing extra piece.
Star-Crossed World Adds a Ton of New Content, From Mouthful Modes to Collectible Figures
In essence, Star-Crossed World follows a similar gameplay structure as the main campaign, but it delves deeper into the ideas previously introduced. For instance, one of the most notable advancements in Kirby and the Forgotten Land was the introduction of Mouthful Mode, where instead of Kirby consuming items, he could extend himself to fit into an item’s frame to solve puzzles. This was a remarkable evolution of the core Kirby idea, and Star-Crossed World introduces new Mouthful Mode abilities, such as my personal favorite – Sign Mouth, which allows Kirby to glide down tracks like a sled.
In the earlier version of “Kirby and the Forgotten Land”, there were characters that players could unlock using a gacha system within Waddle Dee Town. This feature reappears in “Star-Crossed World”, introducing numerous new collectible figures. These figures provide information about newly introduced enemies, Mouthful Modes, and other details. Players can discover these figures across the 12 Starry Stages, or they can buy them from the freshly introduced character, Astronomer Waddle Dee. If you’ve explored every nook and cranny in the main game, you’ll be delighted to find out how many additional items are now available.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land Didn’t Need a Switch 2 Version, But It’s Actually Pretty Good
Initially, when they unveiled “Kirby and the Forgotten Land Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World” in April, I found it peculiar among the initial releases for the Switch 2. Despite really liking the original game, a new version didn’t seem essential or the optimal allocation of the developer’s resources. After considering the circumstances, I was left uncertain about what improvements were made in this respect. This decision felt strange since Nintendo has another major Kirby game coming out later in the year.
Having completed the game “Star-Crossed World”, I still find it surprising as the initial pick for Nintendo Switch 2’s debut. However, it brought back memories of what made me love the original so much. The latest addition, “Kirby and the Forgotten Land“, is already one of the finest Kirby games ever made, and the extra content makes it even sweeter. HAL Laboratory has skillfully built upon existing elements and provided a compelling reason to revisit one of Switch’s best games. With both “Star-Crossed World” and the upcoming “Kirby Air Riders” in November, 2025 is looking like it could be an excellent year for this series.
