A new installment of Sword Art Online is on the way, bringing back Kirito and Asuna in a special anime. While there have been related projects recently, it’s been a while since the main story has focused on these two characters. This new anime will tide fans over while they wait for the next full season.
Bandai Namco is creating a new role-playing game called Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad. What’s really exciting is that it will come with a brand-new anime episode, with an original story crafted by the creator of Sword Art Online, Reki Kawahara. This anime will revisit the Aincrad arc, offering a fresh look at Kirito and Asuna’s experiences. You can watch a preview of the episode, titled “Unanswered//butterfly,” below.
New Sword Art Online Anime Reveals First Look Trailer & Poster
The new Sword Art Online anime special, “Unanswered//butterfly,” is 110 minutes long. However, it will only be available as a bonus for those who buy the Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad game when it launches in Japan. A special screening will take place on May 9th, but access will be limited to those with promotional tickets, and it won’t be the full version that comes with the game.
With Sword Art Online celebrating its success over the past decade, we can expect to see more related projects announced. While several new projects are currently being developed for the anime, it may take some time before a new season of the TV series is released, as there isn’t enough source material available yet.
When Does Sword Art Online’s Anime Comeback?

The Sword Art Online: Alicization season was the most popular yet, and it covered a major storyline from Reki Kawahara’s original books. It ended by hinting at an even larger story to come – the Unital Ring saga – which is still being written in the newest novels. A new TV series probably won’t happen until this saga is finished and there’s enough content to adapt for television.
Sword Art Online is a hugely popular anime, especially within the ‘isekai’ genre, so a new animated release is expected soon. Currently, there are no announced plans for releasing this special outside of Japan, but it will be directed by Tadahiro Yoshihira, who is also co-writing the script with Keisuke Makino. Polygon Pictures is the animation studio.
