Kit Harington famously played Jon Snow throughout all eight seasons of Game of Thrones, and a continuation of his story was almost made. A spin-off series starring Harington began development in 2022, but was cancelled by 2024 because the writers couldn’t come up with a compelling storyline. This isn’t surprising, considering the show ended with Jon Snow leaving for beyond the Wall, leaving little established for future adventures.
Richard Harington is now working on several popular franchises after his time with Game of Thrones. He played Dane Whitman in the Marvel Cinematic Universeās Eternals and recently joined the world of Harry Potter, voicing Gilderoy Lockhart in the full-cast audiobook of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. In an interview with Variety, Harington discussed the role and his fondness for the Harry Potter series. He was also asked if heād ever consider voicing Jon Snow in a new audiobook adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire. Harington quickly said no, stating, āNo, god no. I donāt want to go anywhere near it. I spent 10 years doing that. Thanks, Iām alright.ā
Itās Better If Kit Harington Doesnāt Return As Jon Snow
Kit Harington’s comments are a bit unexpected, especially considering he previously worked on a potential Jon Snow spin-off series. Now that the spin-off has been cancelled, he seems eager to leave the character and the Game of Thrones world behind. After playing the role for a decade, itās understandable he wouldnāt want to revisit it, even in a different format like an audiobook.
With discussions already happening about potential follow-ups to Game of Thrones, George R.R. Martin recently revealed that HBO is indeed working on some sequels. While the details are still unknown, it seems Jon Snow wonāt be involved in these new stories.
It’s simpler to write Jon Snow out of the story now that he’s beyond the Wall, but completely excluding him from a direct continuation with the existing characters would feel like a significant gap. His absence would be easier to justify in a spin-off focusing on a different character, like Arya Stark exploring lands west of Westeros, or a story set far in the future.
Despite Kit Harington’s excellent portrayal of Jon Snow, it’s probably best he doesn’t reprise the role. His character received a satisfying conclusion in the Game of Thrones finale, making it a natural ending for his story. The difficulty in developing a successful spinoff suggests there’s no compelling reason to revisit that ending, which explains and supports Haringtonās decision not to return.
Game of Thrones is available to stream on HBO Max.
