Kouri Richins Breaks Silence at Sentencing for Husband’s Murder

Kouri Richins has received her sentence after being found guilty of murdering her husband, Eric Richins, two months ago.

As many of you know, the author involved in the tragic death of Eric received a life sentence without parole yesterday, May 13th. The prosecution presented evidence showing Eric died after the author put fentanyl into his drink. It’s a heartbreaking situation, and my thoughts are with everyone affected by this loss.

While being sentenced, Kouri spoke directly to her and Eric’s three young sons, urging them to follow their father’s example.

Reading from a prepared statement, she told her sons, according to The Salt Lake Tribune, that she never abandoned them. She emphasized that she would never leave them, and apologized for any moment they felt she had.

Kouri also admitted there were moments in her past that she was “not proud of.”

Everyone has both good and bad qualities, and we shouldn’t be judged solely on our best or worst actions,” the 35-year-old explained, according to NBC News.

During the court hearing, Kouri’s sons shared a statement – read by their therapist – expressing both anger towards their mother and fears for their well-being if she were to be released from prison.

Her 13-year-old son explained, “I’m scared if she’s released, she’ll come after me, my brothers, and our whole family.” He added, “I wish my dad was still here, but I’m actually better off now. I don’t miss how things were before, and I definitely don’t miss Kouri.”

Her 11-year-old son stated he believes he’ll be able to feel safe and have a good life if his mother stays in prison.

Kouri’s 9-year-old added, “If she got out I would be so scared.”

He said she was responsible for his father’s death. He added that he would feel happier, safer, and more able to trust others once she was no longer around.

Kouri was arrested in May 2023, over a year after her husband, Eric, died on March 4, 2022. The arrest happened soon after she published a children’s book called Are You With Me?, which explores a child’s grief over losing a father, and was dedicated to Eric’s memory.

During her trial, prosecutors claimed that Kouri tried to poison Eric with a sandwich on Valentine’s Day in 2022. They said she then successfully poisoned his drink with a fatal amount of fentanyl a month later. The prosecution argued Kouri was motivated by an affair and fear of financial hardship if Eric divorced her.

During her sentencing, Kouri explained to her sons that she had an affair, and her husband also had an affair with someone else, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.

She stated she intends to fight the accusations, and expressed a cynical view of the legal process, saying, “Ideally, things would be fair, but unfortunately, problems always happen.”
