KPop Demon Hunters 2 Just Became More Likely After Netflix & Sony Announce New Partnership Movie

Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix are working together on a new movie, which is great news for fans of KPop Demon Hunters. The success of the animated musical this summer led to this partnership. While the creators are interested in continuing the series, Netflix and Sony still need to work out a few details to make it happen.

Sony Pictures and Netflix are continuing to collaborate, and a new project has been announced: a sequel to the popular animated film The Mitchells vs. the Machines. The original, released in 2021 and nominated for an Oscar, featured the voices of Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, and Abbi Jacobson. Production on The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2 is slated to begin in early 2026, with Guillermo Martinez and JP Sans returning to direct.

Sony Pictures Animation is teaming up with Netflix again to release a sequel to The Mitchells vs. the Machines. Originally, Sony planned a theatrical release for the first movie in 2021, but Netflix acquired the distribution rights when the pandemic hit. This time, according to Variety, Netflix and Sony are working together from the beginning on the sequel, with a closer collaboration planned.

As a movie fan, I’ve been following the situation with Sony and Netflix, and it’s great to see them working together again! I know there was some talk about a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters being stalled until they sorted things out, since both studios own a piece of it. Now, with this new deal for The Mitchells vs. Machines 2 – which sounds like they’re really teaming up this time – it feels like that KPop Demon Hunters sequel is much more likely to happen. It’s a good sign for fans of both projects, honestly!

Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, KPop Demon Hunters features the voices of Arden Cho, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Ken Jeong, and Daniel Dae Kim. It premiered on Netflix on June 20th and had a successful sing-along release in theaters on August 23rd.

Sony and Netflix Are Working It Out on the Remix

Sony and Netflix have been working together for years. Usually, this means Netflix gets the rights to stream Sony’s animated movies, like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Vivo. Their deal for KPop Demon Hunters was a little different – they actually created the movie together, and it went straight to Netflix instead of being shown in theaters.

As a big movie fan, I was surprised by the decision to release KPop Demon Hunters straight to streaming. A lot of people in the industry wondered if it was the right call for Sony, since a theatrical release could have meant even bigger box office numbers. But honestly, maybe it needed to be a Netflix release to become the hit that it was. It’s a tricky situation – sometimes skipping theaters can actually help a movie find its audience.

One of the main issues studios are trying to resolve in their new agreement is how to balance streaming releases with traditional movie theaters, especially when it comes to making more content like KPop Demon Hunters. The deal between Netflix and Sony for Mitchells vs. the Machines 2 doesn’t yet clarify if the film will be released directly on Netflix, as the first one was, or if it will have both a theatrical run and a streaming release. Netflix has sometimes given certain films a limited theatrical release, usually when they’re hoping to win awards, and this could be the approach they take with the Mitchells vs. the Machines sequel as well.

As a huge fan of the series, I’m really hoping this sequel does well. Honestly, it feels like its success could decide if Netflix and Sony keep working together on future projects – and that could mean more KPop Demon Hunters down the line, which I’d be thrilled about!
