Kpop Demon Hunters Sing-Along May Snag First No.1 Opening for Netflix

The Netflix production titled “K-Pop Demon Hunters” has been consistently captivating audiences since its June premiere, holding a strong position on Netflix charts. With its success, the film is poised to lead the box office rankings. In a delight for fans, Netflix recently screened the blockbuster in cinemas over the weekend, featuring a sing-along version. Tickets have been swiftly selling out due to popular demand. If it maintains this momentum, the movie could potentially dethrone “Weapons” and become the first Netflix film to top the box office upon theatrical release. According to Variety, such an achievement would mark a first in Netflix’s history.

Similarly to how Netflix usually avoids sharing streaming viewership data, they also tend not to discuss a movie’s box office performance because most of their releases are streamed instead of being shown in theaters. However, when Netflix does choose to release a film in theaters, it is primarily to meet eligibility requirements for awards seasons. The last Netflix-released film was “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” by writer-director Rian Johnson. Unlike its predecessor “Knives Out“, which did receive a traditional theatrical release and fared well, “Glass Onion” was exclusive to Netflix streaming.

Although easily accessible for home streaming on Netflix, there’s no denying that viewers prefer experiencing the movie in theaters alongside fellow enthusiasts and on a large screen. The film has remained in Netflix’s Top 10 since its June premiere and is projected to surpass “Red Notice” as Netflix’s biggest movie ever after only two months. This animated production, jointly created by Sony Pictures Animation and later acquired by Netflix, will be played in approximately 1,700 theaters this weekend as part of a special sing-along version. Tickets for this event sold out rapidly following its announcement, and while “Weapons” is expected to maintain strong ticket sales, it appears the heroines of HUNTR/X will claim victory at the box office this weekend.

In addition to ruling over the Netflix rankings and apparently the box office, the film K-Pop Demon Hunters has also been leading on the Billboard charts with the music from its fictitious bands, HUNTR/X and the Saja Boys. The songs “Golden” and “Soda Pop”, which have become massive hits from the movie, are likely to be put forward for awards consideration later in the season. Fans can easily access the music for K-Pop Demon Hunters, or if they prefer a physical version, Netflix is launching both vinyl and CD editions of the soundtrack. The vinyl version is already available for pre-order now.

Although Netflix hasn’t officially confirmed a sequel for the hit movie yet, they have hinted at plans for K-Pop Demon Hunters that may include sequels and even spinoffs. This animated film, directed by Chris Appelhans and Maggie Kang, boasts an impressive cast including Arden Cho as Rumi, May Hong as Mira, Ji-young Yoo as Zoey, Ahn Hyo-seop as Jinu, Yunjin Kim as Celine, Ken Jeong as Bobby, Lee Byung-hun as Gwi-ma, and Daniel Dae Kim as Healer Han. The duo co-wrote the screenplay with Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan.

The movie is now available to stream exclusively on Netflix.
