Since its debut on Netflix last summer, KPop Demon Hunters has quickly become a major hit in the animation world. The story of Zoey, Mira, and Rumi is so popular that a sequel is already in the works, along with other projects to build out the show’s universe. Interestingly, a well-known animated band recently publicly discussed the film’s success and offered some critical feedback about KPop Demon Hunters and its featured idol group.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Gorillaz creators Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett talked about the band’s history and creative work. The interviewer suggested Gorillaz paved the way for the game KPop Demon Hunters, a connection Albarn readily acknowledged, though with frustration. He stated that, along with the ABBA hologram concert, many of their original concepts have been adopted and heavily commercialized by others, leaving little truly new.
Jamie Hewlett also pointed out that being an animated band has been a real advantage. He explained that the unique visuals attract younger listeners, who then discover and enjoy the music, ultimately expanding their fanbase.
The Gorillaz Vs. The Demon Hunters

Although KPop Demon Hunters is a contender for two Academy Awards this year, the Gorillaz have also made a significant impact on animation. Since debuting in 1998, this animated group has earned a Grammy and received ten nominations. Throughout their career, they’ve collected twenty-seven awards and continue to produce music, featuring their animated characters in videos and live performances. However, a full-length animated movie based on the Gorillaz may not be in the works.
Netflix scrapped an animated Gorillaz movie project in 2023. Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett had been developing the music and storyline, but the streaming service shifted its focus for animated content. The Gorillaz already have a rich backstory for each band member, offering a lot of potential material that won’t be explored in this canceled film.
It’s funny, but the Gorillaz once did a really memorable collaboration with Cartoon Network. They even added a villain – Ace from the Gangreen Gang from The Powerpuff Girls – as a temporary member of the band! Although Ace didn’t stay for long, it proved just how creatively unexpected the Gorillaz could be.
