Disney’s Frozen films have been incredibly successful, earning over $2.7 billion worldwide in theaters and generating a huge amount of merchandise. Because of this success, Disney is planning to make more Frozen sequels and has reportedly signed deals with stars Kristen Bell, Josh Gad, and Idina Menzel to return.
Disney has reportedly reached agreements with the original voice actors to return for both Frozen 3 and Frozen 4, with the contracts totaling over $60 million, according to The Wrap. While that’s a significant amount, many fans wouldn’t want anyone else voicing Anna, Olaf, and Elsa. Work on the projects will begin shortly, as Frozen 3 has been in the works since 2023 and is now slated for release on November 24, 2027, following a one-year delay from its original 2026 date.
Jennifer Lee will be directing Frozen 3 after leaving her role as Chief Creative Officer at Walt Disney Animation Studios last year. Details about the story are still scarce. Frozen II ended with Anna becoming queen of Arendelle and Elsa choosing to live in the enchanted forest, leaving the characters’ futures uncertain. At the D23 Expo in 2024, some early concept art was revealed, showing Anna and Elsa on horseback gazing at a city in the clouds, with a mysterious shadowy figure present. However, there’s currently no further explanation about what this image means.
Kristen Bell, Josh Gad, and Idina Menzel have all continued to work on various projects since starring in the Frozen films. Recently, Bell appeared in the Netflix series Nobody Wants This, which has been renewed for a third season after releasing its second this fall. Gad has been busy with Spaceballs 2, both starring in and co-writing the film. And Idina Menzel played the leading role in the Broadway musical Redwood from January to May earlier this year.
It’s been eight years since Frozen II came out, and when Frozen 3 is released, it will be interesting to see if the actors’ contracts push Disney to start working on Frozen 4 sooner rather than later—which could even affect the story of a potential second sequel. Besides Frozen 3, Disney is also currently making a fantasy movie called Hexed that’s planned for release next year.
