Akupara Games will release the horror adventure game Kumitantei: Old-School Slaughter, developed by Mango Factory. Inspired by the Danganronpa series, the game will first be available on PC via Steam in early 2026 as an “Episode 1” Early Access release, with a full version planned for both Nintendo Switch and PC. A demo is available to play on PC right now.
I’ve always been a maker at heart, and it all comes from loving other games, movies, and stuff. With Kumitantei, we really just wanted to take all the things we adore – our biggest inspirations – and remix them into something totally new. We’re not even trying to hide where those ideas came from; we’re wearing them proudly!
Kibara explained that growing up, he loved classic anime and adventure games, and he wanted his own game to be a heartfelt homage to those influences. He noticed a trend of developers seeming ashamed to acknowledge their inspirations, likely due to legal worries or the fear of being labeled unoriginal. Kibara prefers to create something clearly inspired by its roots rather than something that feels fake or lacks passion.
Here is an overview of the game, via Akupara Games:
About
Inspired by the anime Urusei Yatursa and taking place in a reimagined 1989 Japan, you play as Himari Sanada, a barista unexpectedly caught in a dangerous game. She’s trapped in an underground bunker with fifteen other exceptionally gifted students, forced to fight for their lives as part of a disturbing experiment called the Apathy Experiment.
Kumitantei is a game that mixes the look of classic anime with scary psychological horror. You’ll solve disturbing crimes, participate in challenging trials, and build relationships with your classmates to gain an advantage. The game features card-based arguments where you need to think quickly and use logic to uncover the truth. Your choices have real consequences, and learning who to trust is key – but trust can also be a liability.
I’m really hooked by this game! It seems like you and your friends are thrown into this crazy situation – you either work together to figure out what’s going on with this ‘Apathy Experiment,’ or… well, things get seriously bad. Like, life-or-death, and you might not even be yourself anymore. It’s super intense!
