Kurt Sutter, the creator of the hit show Sons of Anarchy, is working on a new noir series for MGM+. Sutter is famous for Sons of Anarchy, which ran for seven seasons on FX (2008-2014) and followed the lives of a motorcycle club and their adventures in the fictional California town of Charming.
According to Deadline, Kurt Sutter is creating a new noir series for MGM+ set in 1950s Los Angeles. The show will follow a private investigator navigating crime and corruption within the world of old Hollywood. Sutter is writing, running, and executive producing the series through his production company, SutterInk.
Kurt Sutter, known for his work on the crime drama The Shield, steps into the noir world with his new series on MGM+. This marks a return to the Los Angeles crime setting where he began his career as a writer and eventually an executive producer on The Shield, a show about a controversial LAPD unit that bends the rules – and the law – to keep the peace.
Following the success of The Shield, Kurt Sutter returned to FX with Sons of Anarchy. He then co-created Mayans M.C., which ran for five seasons between 2018 and 2023. His most recent project is The Abandons, a popular Western drama on Netflix that launched last week and attracted 7.3 million viewers over its opening weekend.
Kurt Sutter is working on a new Apple TV series called Nomad, featuring Jason Momoa. The show will explore the dangerous world of motorcycle gangs in New Zealand. Sutter is writing the series with Chris Collins, who will also oversee it as the showrunner.
An L.A. noir series feels like a natural fit for creator Kurt Sutter. He’s previously tackled tough Los Angeles crime themes – like police corruption, gang violence, drugs, and prostitution – in shows like The Shield. While his new series will revisit those themes, it will be set in 1950s Los Angeles, offering a fresh historical backdrop.
