Okay, so I just heard – and I’m SO excited! – that the author behind one of the biggest books of the last ten years is hinting at a whole new series! It’s not officially announced yet, but the rumor is definitely making the rounds and I’m already hoping it’s true!
In a recent post on his Substack newsletter, Star Wars: The Legacy of Vader — The Reign of Kylo Ren writer Charles Soule playfully criticized the ending of his own series. He also hinted that another installment is planned. Soule jokingly wrote, “What a terrible, unsatisfying ending! What was I even thinking? Who came up with that?”
The post playfully mocks itself. Soule continued, quoting a fictional angry reader: “This writer should be fired! (But the amazing artist Luke Ross, colorist Nolan Woodard, and letterer Joe Caramagna deserve fantastic work for years to come!).” He then added, hoping for some explanation someday, that writers sometimes act pretentious, doing strange things when readers just want a good story, before dismissing the whole thing.
Soule shared that the first collected edition of the series is performing exceptionally well, stating, “LEGACY OF VADER: THE REIGN OF KYLO REN VOL. 1 is selling incredibly well, which is fantastic news. I believe the storytelling we all contributed to is of the highest quality, and it’s rewarding to see that it’s resonating with readers and gaining a wider audience.”
What Is Star Wars: Legacy of Vader About?
This comic book series begins after the events of Star Wars: The Last Jedi and before The Rise of Skywalker. It focuses on Kylo Ren’s travels across the galaxy to the planet Mustafar. This desolate and rocky world is where Darth Vader once learned and perfected his skills as a Sith Lord, dedicating himself to the dark side of the Force.
Man, playing through Kylo Ren’s story was a wild ride. He kept digging up way more than he bargained for – seriously messed up stuff that really made him face his own flaws. It’s just frustrating, because in the end, if he could’ve just let go of all that anger and pain, things could have been different. And the last issue of Star Wars: Legacy of Vader hinted that he’s not gone for good, which is cool, but they didn’t say when or how he’d be back, leaving me hanging!
After it came out, many Star Wars fans saw Legacy of Vader as a way to fill the void left by the canceled Ben Solo movie. That film would have been directed by Steven Soderbergh, who once said he enjoyed creating it, even though fans wouldn’t get to see it.
Adam Driver, known for his role in Star Wars and as Kylo Ren, revealed details about a planned storyline and why it was ultimately rejected. He explained that he and the creative team presented the idea to Disney’s Bob Iger and Alan Bergman, but they didn’t approve it because they couldn’t reconcile the idea of Ben Solo still being alive. That ended the discussion.
Star Wars: Legacy of Vader can be purchased wherever comics are sold.
