Catching up on season 1 of Landman before season 2? Here are 7 key things to remember before Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton) returns. Season 2 premieres November 16th on Paramount+.
Taylor Sheridan has created several successful shows for Paramount+, but Landman is truly standing out. Co-created with Christian Wallace, the first season of Landman is now the most-watched original series ever on the platform.
As a huge fan of the show, I was blown away to hear that the first episode of Landman pulled in 35 million viewers worldwide! But the real kicker? The season one finale became the most-watched finale ever on Paramount+. Seriously impressive numbers – it’s clear a lot of people were hooked!
The first season of Landman ended with many storylines unfinished, setting the stage for season 2. The new season adds fresh faces, including Tommy Norris’s father, portrayed by Sam Elliott, and expands the role of Galino, the head of the Mexican cartel, played by Andy Garcia.
Here are the main things to know from “The Crumbs of Hope,” Landman season 1’s ending:
Monty Miller Died Of A Heart Attack, Cami Miller Now Runs M-Tex
In the first season finale of Landman, Monty Miller (played by Jon Hamm) unexpectedly died of a heart attack. As the president of M-Tex, Monty was a recurring figure who frequently appeared on the phone, often reacting to updates Tommy shared with him throughout the season.
Sadly, Monty was very sick and passed away due to a heart condition. He wasn’t strong enough to receive a heart transplant. His death means his wife, Cami Miller (Demi Moore), now fully owns M-Tex. Tommy suggested she sell the company, but Cami is determined to keep it running as a way to remember Monty.
Cami is struggling with what to do next with the company, particularly after learning about Monty’s illegal activities, which were previewed in the trailer for Landman season 2.
Tommy Norris Is The New M-Tex President & Still Deals With His Family
While Monty Miller was alive, he appointed Tommy Norris as the vice president of operations at M-Tex. But Tommy was more than just a colleague to Monty, and this became clear when Monty became unable to work. In his will, Monty named Tommy as the new president of M-Tex, to take his place.
Tommy, the new President of M-Tex, is facing several urgent challenges. These include managing relationships with the company’s board, helping Cami Miller transition into her role as the sole owner, addressing problems with Mexican cartels, and working to secure a farm-out agreement for the company.
Tommy’s family adds a lot of stress to his life. He and his ex-wife, Angela, are attempting to rebuild their relationship, but he’s struggling with his daughter Ainsley’s active love life. Meanwhile, his son Cooper is pursuing his own goals in the oil industry.
Cooper Is Setting Up His Own Drilling Business & Growing Closer To Ariana
Throughout the first season of Landman, Cooper Norris and Ariana Medina grew closer, even though Ariana was still mourning her late husband, Elvio. In the season finale, Cooper helped Ariana revisit cherished memories of Elvio, and she confessed that she’s letting him take her husband’s place in her heart.
Cooper wants to make a fortune in the oil industry, so he’s training to become a landman. He’s partnering with investors to act as a go-between for oil companies, acquiring land and drilling rights from property owners who believe their land isn’t likely to have oil.
Cooper’s starting a new business that’s likely to cause problems for M-Tex and Tommy, and he’s currently unaware that his father is now the president of M-Tex.
Rebecca Falcone Has To Negotiate A Massive M-Tex Deal
Even though Rebecca Falcone and Tommy had a disagreement, Monty Miller chose Rebecca to be the company’s lawyer before he unexpectedly became ill and passed away. Now, Rebecca works for Tommy as the new President of M-Tex, and Norris has given her a job that she’s very afraid of.
Tommy instructed Rebecca to finalize a $170 million agreement to lease the farm, with Nate guiding her through the financial details and Dale Bradley explaining the scientific aspects. Rebecca strongly objects to the plan, which involves fracking, but feels pressured to complete the deal because her job at Falcone is on the line.
Angela And Ainsley Are Helping An Old Folks Home
Switching gears completely, Angela and Ainsley have been volunteering at a senior center, aiming to cheer up the residents. Their efforts took an unexpected turn when they brought the seniors to a strip club, and Ainsley even convinced her boyfriend, Ryder Slaggert, to perform a dance for them.
The first season of Landman struggled to give Angela a strong storyline beyond her efforts to fix her marriage with Tommy and her often-chaotic family meals. However, her unconventional approach was surprisingly well-received by the residents of the assisted living facility, who seemed to enjoy her fresh perspective. Angela and Ainsley’s work with the elderly is expected to continue in season 2 of Landman.
Ainsley Is Seeing Ryder and Going To College
Throughout the first season of Landman, Ainsley Norris was figuring out her plans after high school. Now, as Angela and Tommy’s daughter, she’s heading off to college. The second season of Landman filmed scenes at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, suggesting that this might be where Ainsley ends up going to school.
In the first season of Landman, Ainsley started dating football player Ryder and convinced him to perform for her older clients. She then exchanged sexual favors for payment, essentially ‘getting Ryder paid.’ Their complicated relationship is set to continue in season 2, and it’s another secret Ainsley is keeping from her father.
Galino Saved Tommy’s Life & Wants To Be Friends
Throughout the first season of Landman, a tense rivalry developed between Jimenez (played by Alex Meraz), a lieutenant in a Mexican drug cartel, and Tommy Norris. This conflict came to a head in the finale when Jimenez kidnapped Tommy and made him watch valuable drilling equipment get destroyed. He then held Tommy captive at a strip club and tortured him, but shortly after, Jimenez and his crew were unexpectedly killed in a shooting.
In season 2 of Landman, Andy Garcia appears as Galino, a powerful new enemy who unexpectedly saves Tommy. Galino’s motives are surprising – he wants to work with M-Tex and even become friends with Tommy. While Tommy has no desire for a friendship, he understands Galino is an even bigger threat than Jimenez ever was.
