Landman Season 2 Replaces Yellowstone Tropes: Family Dinners and Sibling Rivalry

Warning: SPOILERS For Landman Season 2‘s Premiere – “Death and a Sunset”

The show Landman is being compared to Yellowstone because it features the Norris family embracing familiar themes seen in the Dutton family. Season 2 of Landman begins a few weeks after the first season ended, with Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton) still getting used to his role as the new President of M-Tex Oil.

Tommy leads a demanding life, balancing a tough career as a corporate executive with the complications of his personal life. He finds no peace at home, dealing with issues involving his ex-wife, Angela, and their teenage daughter, Ainsley.

Landman is a major success for Paramount+, quickly becoming Taylor Sheridan’s most popular show since Yellowstone. Like Yellowstone, every episode of Landman is written by Sheridan himself, and the show borrows some familiar themes from the Dutton family, applying them to the Norris family in Midland, Texas.

Landman Replaced Yellowstone’s Disastrous Dutton Family Dinners

The second season of Landman began with Angela trying to impress Tommy, Ainsley, and Cooper Norris (played by Jacob Lofland) with a family dinner. She also invited Tommy’s roommates, Nathan (Colm Feore) and Dale Bradley (James Jordan). Angela made a cacio e pepe dish, and she lavishly added $2400 worth of shaved truffles, though her guests seemed unsure about it.

Tommy embarrasses Angela during dinner by making rude comments about her menstrual cycle in front of Dale and, unfortunately, within earshot of his ex-wife. This infuriates Angela, and she erupts in a furious outburst, causing everyone to run for cover as she destroys the dinner table and throws food around the room. Eventually, Tommy is able to calm her down.

The messy dinners Angela has are a running gag on Landman, and it’s something the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan, took directly from Yellowstone. Throughout the five seasons of Yellowstone, the Dutton family could never have a peaceful dinner when Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) was present, though her reactions weren’t quite as extreme as Angela’s.

Beth was consistently unpredictable and always managed to start a conflict during family dinners. Whether it was with her brother Jamie or Summer, her father’s romantic partner, she’d inevitably cause a scene. These outbursts always ended with Beth angrily leaving the table, leaving her father, John, feeling disappointed and defeated.

Landman’s Brother & Sister Hatred Replaced Beth & Jamie Dutton’s Yellowstone Feud

Taylor Sheridan uses a familiar dynamic from his show Yellowstone in Landman: the intense dislike between Cooper and Ainsley echoes the bitter rivalry between Beth and Jamie Dutton. Similar to the Dutton siblings, Cooper and Ainsley seem to genuinely despise each other.

While Beth and Jamie’s issues are known, Landman hasn’t explained what’s causing the problems between Ainsley and Cooper. The show Yellowstone revealed that years ago, Jamie lied to Beth when she was a teenager and needed his help. Because of Jamie’s actions, Beth is now unable to have children.

While Ainsley and Cooper’s harsh words were just insults, Beth actually carried out her threat to kill Jamie in the final episode of Yellowstone. This followed a brutal and deadly fight between the Dutton siblings.

No matter the reason for the animosity between Cooper and Ainsley, it seems unlikely that Taylor Sheridan would push their conflict to the point of serious consequences, like someone being exiled.

Though located a thousand miles from the Dutton family’s old Montana ranch, Midland, Texas is increasingly resembling the world of Yellowstone.
