DC Studios’ reboot, led by James Gunn, is already exciting for fans, and there’s even more good news now. The highly anticipated HBO Max show, Lanterns, is officially moving forward, which is something many have been eagerly waiting to hear about.
There were previous reports about a movie called Lanterns, featuring Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyler Chandler as Hal Jordan, and now Warner Bros. Discovery has officially confirmed the project in a recent statement to stockholders.
The exact release date isn’t confirmed yet, but it’s expected to be announced within the next few weeks. With only a short time left in 2025, DC Studios needs enough time to properly market the show on HBO Max. Here’s an excerpt from a letter to shareholders outlining the schedule for DCU projects in 2026, including the upcoming Supergirl series starring Milly Alcock and the new Superman series with David Corenswet.
DC Studios has several projects in development. Lanterns will premiere on HBO Max in early 2026. The movies Supergirl and Clayface are planned for release in the summer and fall of 2026, respectively. Additionally, James Gunn is writing and directing Man of Tomorrow, a sequel to Superman.
Early 2026 Has a Nice Ring to It
Of all the upcoming projects, Lanterns will be the first DC Universe series created specifically for smaller screens under the direction of James Gunn. While Peacemaker premiered on HBO Max before Gunn became co-CEO of DC Studios in November 2022, he’s now using Season 2 of Peacemaker to lay the groundwork, and Lanterns will significantly expand on that for Warner Bros. Discovery.
Fans have a lot to look forward to with the upcoming Lanterns storyline. It pairs John Stewart and Jordan with a compelling, mystery-driven dynamic that will create both intense personal conflict and exciting action. The contrast between Pierre’s calm demeanor and Chandler’s more rigid, military style promises a unique take on cosmic justice. There’s even a chance Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) could show up to shake things up even more! We’ll have answers to many of our questions soon, in just a few months.
