**Warning: Contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Last One Laughing UK.**
It seemed unlikely Prime Video could surpass the incredible humor of Last One Laughing UK’s first season. With memorable moments like Bob Mortimer and Richard Ayoade’s speed dating segment, Danny Dyer’s acting lessons for the cast, and unexpected visits from Nick Mohammed and Alison Hammond, the show had already set a high bar.
Meet the comedians for season two! Roisin Conaty playfully calls them the “deadpan daddies,” and this year’s group is wonderfully diverse. Many, like Romesh Ranganathan and Diane Morgan, surprised everyone by sticking around longer than expected thanks to their dry wit.
Did the comedians succeed because they were genuinely funny and made people laugh, or did their appeal lie in the dry, sarcastic wit that British audiences enjoy?
Diane Morgan is popular for playing Liz in Motherland, a calm and practical mother who doesn’t panic, even in extreme situations like accidentally cutting off a finger. She’s also known for her character Philomena Cunk. While Cunk’s usual style wasn’t heavily featured on Last One Laughing, it was Morgan’s dry wit that allowed her to succeed in the competition until she received a penalty.

Romesh Ranganathan is another brilliantly dry comedian, and many would argue he’s the best in the series (no offense to David!). His uniquely flat delivery is a huge part of what makes him so funny. It was a shame to see him eliminated after Jimmy Carr’s distracting and silly interruption from the bathroom.
We’re down to our final two contestants: Sam Campbell and David Mitchell. Right from the start, it was obvious that either of them could win, thanks to their uniquely awkward but funny style of comedy.
Campbell had a distinct advantage over other comedians. Few people were as well-acquainted with him and his style of comedy, which really helped him stand out.
Whether it was collecting Bob Mortimer – an act that earned the former champion a yellow card – or trailing Alan Carr and asking hilariously straightforward questions with a perfectly straight face, Campbell was brilliant. He truly excelled at what Brits do best: deadpan comedy!
Research from International House Manchester suggests that British humour is often understated and dry, a style that, while common, can be difficult for some to grasp.
This type of humor isn’t new – you can see examples of it going back years, like John Cleese’s performance in the ‘Ministry of Silly Walks’ sketch from Monty Python.

That’s why Last One Laughing resonated so strongly with viewers in the UK, and why David Mitchell felt like the natural choice to win.
I always loved this comedian – he had this really unique style, a bit awkward but so observant, and it felt like he could just read people. That’s why his song ‘What a Picture’ hit so hard; it felt unexpected coming from him, but it totally worked.
The nearly three-minute performance featured Mitchell doing something so unexpected, it was hard to believe. What really impressed everyone, and ultimately won him the competition, was his ability to do it with a completely straight face, showing no emotion and without even cracking a smile.
While a show featuring only dry-witted comedians might become a little dull, the cast also included energetic and playful performers like Alan Carr, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Amy Gledhill, and Maisie Adam. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, they were quickly eliminated from the competition.
It’s surprising how well Mel Giedroyc did on Last One Laughing! From struggling to keep a straight face – she even needed to see a doctor about her jaw from all the suppressed laughter – to her famously unusual cookies that completely shocked Ranganathan, she was a real underdog who truly excelled in the competition.

Last One Laughing UK just wouldn’t be the same without Bob Mortimer, and it would be really disappointing if he didn’t participate again. Maybe the third time will be the lucky one? I’ve said it before, but he absolutely needs to tour performing songs – and it’s even funnier considering he makes them up on the spot!
We need more!
So, thank you Last One Laughing UK, for providing the nation with the laughter it so deeply craves.
