Last summer’s blockbuster, *Deadpool & Wolverine*, earned over $1 billion at the box office, but Marvel Studios hasn’t announced what’s next for Deadpool or Wolverine. While Marvel’s Kevin Feige has mentioned they’ve been talking about future plans, fans are eager for details about when Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman might return as the characters. There’s been speculation that Reynolds will play Deadpool in the upcoming *Avengers: Doomsday*, which is expected to heavily feature the X-Men. It’s still unclear if Jackman will be involved, but recent rumors suggest a possible path forward for his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
A new report suggests Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine could stick around in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for quite a while. Sources say Marvel is planning for Jackman to appear in future projects, even after the upcoming *Avengers: Secret Wars* movie. This could mean he’ll play a key role in launching the MCU into its next phase after the Multiverse Saga ends. It’s also believed that one of the first films Marvel makes after *Secret Wars* will be a reboot of the *X-Men* franchise.
Will Hugh Jackman Be In Marvel’s X-Men Reboot?
It’s not too shocking to hear Hugh Jackman might return in *Avengers: Secret Wars*. The movie is expected to feature many Marvel heroes, and fans are hoping to see Jackman’s Wolverine interact with Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man. More interestingly, if the rumors are true, Marvel seems to want Jackman to continue appearing in future MCU films. While there haven’t been any official announcements about the *X-Men* reboot, reports suggest director Jake Schreier and his team are looking for new, less famous actors to help keep costs down. After giving veteran *X-Men* actors from the Fox films a proper farewell in *Doomsday* and *Secret Wars*, a fresh cast would allow the characters to be reimagined for a new generation.
It also makes sense to continue using Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. His version of the character is now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, solidifying his place as the most recognizable on-screen Wolverine. While many actors have played famous superheroes like Batman and Spider-Man, Jackman has defined the role of Wolverine for so long that it’s hard to imagine anyone else in it. Instead of asking a new actor to follow in his footsteps – a difficult task, as no one wants to be compared to the original – Marvel might choose to keep Jackman playing the role for as long as he’s willing.
If plans move forward, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine could become a mentor, helping a new group of mutants. This would be a fitting and emotionally resonant way to continue his character’s journey after *Deadpool & Wolverine*. When we first see this version of Wolverine, he’s struggling with past mistakes and doesn’t want to be a hero anymore. Now, he’s ready to be part of a team, making him an excellent teacher for younger mutants. Plus, Jackman is still in great physical condition, so he could easily handle any action scenes in the upcoming *X-Men* reboot.
Hugh Jackman is getting older, and while he enjoys playing Wolverine, he probably doesn’t want to play the role indefinitely. Marvel needs a plan for the future, so someone else can eventually take over. Luckily, *Deadpool & Wolverine* offered a clever solution without needing to replace Jackman. Dafne Keen, who was excellent as Laura/X-23 in *Logan*, returned in the film, showing she’s capable of becoming the next Wolverine on a new X-Men team. While Keen isn’t sure what her future with Marvel holds, making her a regular part of the MCU could be a great move for everyone.
