Laura Dern to Star in Jeffrey Epstein Investigation TV Series

Laura Dernno longer has to keep this big, little secret.

According to TopMob News, the Academy Award-winning actor will lead a new limited series focusing on the investigation surrounding the late Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender.

The series is based on the book Perversion of Justice: The Jeffrey Epstein Story by Miami Herald journalist Julie K. Brown, and will detail her investigation into Epstein’s sex abuse crimes as it unfolded in 2017 and 2018.

Dern, age 59, will portray Brown in the upcoming Sony Pictures TV series, which is the first fictional drama focused on the Epstein case.

This new show is based on Julie K. Brown’s bestselling book about Jeffrey Epstein. It tells the story of an investigative reporter and her explosive uncovering of the secret plea deal Epstein made with federal prosecutors. The show, and the book it’s based on, follow Brown’s years of work at the Miami Herald, where she identified 80 victims, convinced many to share their stories publicly, and ultimately helped lead to the arrests of both Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.

The Jurassic Park actor will not only star in the series but will also be an executive producer. Joining them in that role are Adam McKay, the screenwriter of Don’t Look Up, and Kevin Messick.

Sharon Hoffman, the writer behind shows like Mrs. America and House of Cards, will be writing the new series and sharing showrunning duties with Eileen Myers.

After journalist Virginia Roberts Giuffre’s detailed accusations came to light, Jeffrey Epstein – who had already been convicted of soliciting a minor for prostitution – was arrested in July 2019 and charged with sex trafficking and conspiring to traffic minors. He died by suicide in jail just weeks later.

Maxwell, his ex-girlfriend, was arrested in 2020 and later found guilty of federal sex trafficking. In 2022, at age 64, she received a 20-year prison sentence, followed by five years of supervised release.

Public attention remains focused on Jeffrey Epstein, and there are increasing demands for the Department of Justice to make all its files about him and his connections to important people publicly available. This includes scrutiny of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, previously known as Prince Andrew.

Although Prince Andrew hasn’t been accused of any crime related to Epstein’s abuse, he was arrested in the U.K. in February. The arrest stemmed from allegations that he shared confidential documents with Epstein back in 2010, when he was working as a trade envoy.

Andrew hasn’t spoken publicly about his arrest, but he maintains his innocence regarding his connection to Epstein.

Following ongoing accusations linked to Epstein, he lost his royal titles and was asked to leave his home.

In a statement last October, Andrew announced he would stop using his royal titles and honors. He also reiterated that he strongly denies the allegations made against him.

I’ve been so excited about this new show, but it’s awesome to see so many other books getting the TV treatment too! I’m always on the lookout for what’s coming next, so here’s a rundown of other book-to-TV adaptations I’ve been following…

The 2024 Emmy Awards saw 10 nominations for the miniseries Lessons in Chemistry, which is based on Bonnie Garmus’s 2022 novel. Brie Larson, Lewis Pullman, Aja Naomi King, and Millicent Shelton were among those nominated for their performances. Both the Apple TV+ series—nominated for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series—and the book tell the story of Elizabeth Zott (Larson), a chemist who faces hardship and sexism before finding success as a cooking show host in 1960s Southern California.

The 2024 television series Shƍgun made history as the first Japanese-language show to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series, earning a total of 25 nominations at the 2024 Emmys. Based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name, the FX show tells the story of Japan in the 1600s as the Edo period began. This isn’t the first time the story has been adapted; previously, it was a 1980 miniseries, a stage musical, and even inspired board and video games.

I’ve been hooked on The Morning Show ever since it premiered in 2019! It’s become a real standout in the streaming landscape, and honestly, the acting is phenomenal. Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Billy Crudup consistently deliver amazing performances – it’s no surprise they’ve all been nominated for Emmys! The show, which is based on Brian Stelter’s book Top of the Morning, really pulls you behind the scenes of morning television. Over the years, it’s earned a whopping 27 nominations, and I was thrilled when Billy Crudup finally won an Emmy in 2020 for his supporting role – he absolutely deserved it!

The second installment of Ryan Murphy’s anthology series, Feud: Capote vs. The Swans (2024), dramatizes the downfall of Truman Capote’s relationships with a group of prominent New York socialites—known as his “Swans.” The series explores how Capote alienated his friends after publishing a revealing article in Esquire magazine in 1975, which thinly disguised details about their lives. Based on Laurence Leamer’s 2021 book, Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era, the FX show featured a star-studded cast including Naomi Watts, Diane Lane, ChloĂ« Sevigny, Calista Flockhart, Demi Moore, Molly Ringwald, and the late Treat Williams. HBO’s series, based on the popular novel by Liane Moriarty, attracted a stellar cast including Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Zoe Kravitz, and Laura Dern, who played the five women at the center of a murder mystery. The first season was as captivating as the book and won eight Primetime Emmy Awards. It was so successful that Meryl Streep joined the cast for season two, even though the story had already moved beyond the original novel. While season two didn’t receive quite the same level of praise as the first, it still earned Emmy nominations for supporting actresses Meryl Streep and Laura Dern.

The new Apple TV+ comedy Palm Royale received three Emmy nominations in 2024, including Outstanding Comedy Series, with Kristen Wiig nominated as Outstanding Lead Actress and Carol Burnett as Outstanding Supporting Actress. While inspired by Juliet McDaniel’s 2018 novel Mr. & Mrs. American Pie, the show takes significant liberties with the book’s plot. The series, set in the late 1960s, centers on Maxine Simmons, played by Wiig, a former beauty queen trying to enter the exclusive world of Palm Beach society. In contrast, the novel follows Maxine after she’s ostracized to Scottsdale, Arizona, following a Thanksgiving incident where her husband announces he’s leaving her for his secretary.
