It’s being speculated that fresh rumors about the upcoming HBO Max series, “Lanterns,” suggest they may have found an ideal substitute for Blake Lively in her role. This casting decision seems to imply that the character could potentially introduce yet another beloved DC Comics superhero into the film.
According to an exclusive report by Jeff Sneider, it’s been leaked that three-time Oscar nominee Laura Linney has agreed to star in the upcoming TV series “Lanterns”. She’ll be joining forces with Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre who are already part of the show’s cast.
The upcoming DCU series titled “Lanterns” focuses on the Green Lantern Corps, with Hal Jordan (Chandler) and John Stewart (Pierre) taking center stage. Additionally, Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), who’s set to debut in “Superman” this summer, will have a less prominent role in the movie.
The TV show titled “Lanterns” is set to debut on HBO Max around the beginning of 2026. At present, production for this series is underway, making it the initial standalone venture for the Green Lantern character since the 2011 film starring Ryan Reynolds. In this upcoming series, Kyle Chandler portrays Hal Jordan, Aaron Pierre plays John Stewart, Kelly Macdonald takes on the role of Kerry, Garret Dillahunt is William Macon, and Jason Ritter assumes the part of Billy Macon.
Could Laura Linney Play Carol Ferris in Lanterns?
It hasn’t been confirmed yet who Laura Linney will portray, but there’s speculation that she might step into the role of Hal Jordan’s longtime love interest, Carol Danvers, a character previously played by Blake Lively in the live-action Green Lantern film featuring Ryan Reynolds.
Though Linney’s character hasn’t been named yet, she is around 61 years old, similar to Kyle Chandler who is 59. In various DC Comics, movies, and cartoons, Carol Ferris has always been Hal Jordan’s romantic interest. Given that the DCU cast a 59-year-old Hal Jordan, it implies he might have been serving as a Green Lantern for quite some time. Additionally, since the DCU has already hinted at Superman not being a new hero through the Superman toys displayed in the trailer, this fits with our understanding of the storyline.
Given Jordan’s long tenure as a Green Lantern, it’s plausible that Carol Ferris may have had past relationships with him. This scenario raises an intriguing question. Since we know of at least three Green Lanterns on Earth (no Kyle Rayner has been mentioned), could it be possible that Carol is also an existing hero within the series?
Carol Ferris Is Star Sapphire in DC Comics
In the comic book universe of DC, Carol Ferris assumes the role of Star Sapphire, similar to the Green Lantern Corps. The Star Sapphires, like the Sinestro Corps (portrayed by Ulrich Thomsen), are part of the seven corps. While the majority of Star Sapphires, who are all female warriors, tend to act as villains, Carol Ferris stands out as a hero among them.
In the HBO Max series, it’s possible they may introduce the character Star Sapphire to illustrate the complexity of the various corps. However, the initial season of Green Lantern might not include many new elements to keep things simple for new viewers. It’s also a possibility that Carol Ferris could remain a human character in the series rather than assuming the role of Star Sapphire in the DC Universe. Alternatively, Laura Linney could portray an entirely distinct character.
In my perspective as a movie enthusiast, I’ve been intrigued by the whispers circulating since James Gunn hinted at Zoe Saldana potentially parting ways with her Gamora role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, to embrace a new superhero character in the DC Universe. Age-wise, Saldana, being 46, aligns perfectly with the age range required for the DCU’s Carol Danvers, also known as Captain Marvel.
However, it seems far-fetched to me that the DCU’s Green Lantern Corps would cast a seasoned actress like Laura Linney without having substantial plans for her character. Swapping Blake Lively as Carol Ferris is an astute decision, in my opinion.
