Lauren Lyle reveals huge difference between Karen Pirie and her dramatic new role in The Ridge

The complete first season of the new thriller, The Ridge, is now streaming on BBC iPlayer. It features Lauren Lyle, known for her role in Karen Pirie, taking on a brand new character.

Lyle stars as Mia, a doctor from Scotland who secretly struggles with opioid addiction. She travels to New Zealand for her sister Cassy’s wedding, leaving behind complicated problems at her job.

When Mia arrives, she’s devastated to discover Cassy has died in what appears to be a fall from a mountain. Convinced Cassy was murdered, Mia begins a search for the person responsible.

Lyle explained that playing a drug addict was unlike any role he’d taken on before. He described the character as an anesthesiologist secretly battling addiction, someone trying to hide it and maintain a normal appearance, rather than fitting the stereotype of someone living on the streets.

It’s enjoyable to play a character who’s flawed – someone who’s an anti-hero, occasionally cruel, and willing to manipulate others. This character definitely has those traits. In contrast, Karen is generally a much more genuinely good person, which makes this character a departure from that.

Lyle also explained she was drawn to the series because it was filmed in New Zealand. She used to live there and had a significant part of her childhood there, so the project – combining New Zealand and Scotland, two places important to her – felt like an opportunity she couldn’t miss. She really wanted to be involved and couldn’t bring herself to decline the role.

She explained that the scripts contained some strange and compelling moments. She specifically mentioned a scene from the first episode where the character pulled her sister’s body from a drawer, lay down beside her, and fell asleep holding her hand. She found this both unsettling and touching, highlighting the character’s deep love for her sister as a particularly strong element.

“That’s so strange. So it was lots of those kind of things.”

The show features Jay Ryan, known for his role in ‘It Chapter 2’, alongside Dulcie Smart (‘Rematch’), Florence Hartigan (‘Madam’), Chloe Parker (‘Grafted’), David Van Horn (‘Heart Eyes’), Taqi Nazeer (‘Shetland’), Claire Dargo (‘Doctors’), and Cora Bissett (‘Annika’).

You can now watch the complete series of The Ridge on BBC iPlayer. It will also be shown on BBC Two starting Thursday, October 23rd at 9pm.
